There is another thread about making concaves but I can't find it now.

Or by using this tool. I bet that was expensive! Please can someone tell me what it's called and the size?
I think I'd have to stick to a chisel and sandpaper for the few I'd need to make.

It is called Forstner bit. It's available in hardware stores and online.

I haven't been able to find exactly the right tool on line so think I might go for the old fashioned method. I know I have one of these somewhere Gouge Carving Chisel (if my son hasn't walked off with it). This chisel and some sandpaper might do the job.

I have used this Carving Chisel and then sand paper for finishing. The concave doesn't get very round but good enough to keep the eggs together.

That'll do me... just as long as the birds are happy I think I'll have months to get this organised as my birds are 2012 stock so not ready to have a nest box to play with yet.

So this gives you enough time to sort this out

So this gives you enough time to sort this out Plenty I hope. I'll enjoy tinkering in the garage if I can find the tools I need - my son is inclined to borrow them.

If you haven't got a tool to cut out the entrance hole, you can simply cut a piece out of the top of the front panel and you can round it off with a rasp if you like.

hi there ,thought i would share this with you all, seen barrie shutts in a thread so i decided to make one or a dozen 1.you will need some 9mm or 12mm plywood or white pvc fascia board,600mm by 400mm and a piece of dowel plus some 25mm pine 2.below is a cutting plan for the nest box you will need to cut 4of(1)size150mm by 210mm 1of(2)size150mm by 130mm 1of(3)size150mm by 170mm 1of(4)size130mm by 60mm 1of(5)size130mm by 185mm out of 25mm pine 1of(6)dowel for perch75mm hinge and catch to suit 3.here is the ply all cut plus the piece of pine for the concave 4.nail or staple the body of the nest box together as below 5.place the front of the nest box in the end and nail or staple on all sides 6.make the concave nest pan as in pic 7.next is to fit the door use a small piano hinge cut to size ,you can have the door opening left or right, fasten door with catch of your choice, fit perch to front of nest box,and attach to front of breeding cage, again down to you how you fix ,hook and eyes, picture hangers are good Hopefully this will answer your question Karl (first post in this thread )
