I have been procrastinating these past few weeks about getting some more chickens. Since losing Truffle and Hazel I have been most upset. You get so attached to these animals (well I do, even though they are just chickens) and when they pass your world comes crashing down. I love all my chooks past and present and can't bear the thought of losing any more. Anyway, I digress. I have found a more local breeder. My original lady, even though she is brilliant and has the best chickens ever, is so far away. This local breeder, in Brabourne, has several 7 - 8 week old Orpingtons for sale. She sounds really nice over the phone and I said I would contact her again within the next 2 weeks. (I don't want to take the chickens too young!!) She said if anyone contacts her in the meantime wanting to take ALL of her Orpingtons she will phone me first to give me the chance to get mine. This, I thought, was really nice of her. Plus of course she has to accurately sex them as we don't need/want any cockerels do we? They are £30 to £35 each, a little on the expensive side, but you are paying for a pure-breed. So, Friday this week, my daughter and her OH are coming over to re-assemble the second coop that I have, in preparation of taking the new babies! What will Dusty think of that methinks??? So a visit to Brabourne is planned for next week.

That's very exciting Shirls. just a thought, is the poultry transporting ban thingy lifted now? I ask because we need to move ours soon, (hopefully)

DEFRA have lifted all 'Protection' and 'Surveillance' zones, so birds are ok to transport starlingqueen. Usual biosecurity should still be in force though apparently. Their Avian Flu website is a 'minefield'!!!!

Yes MORE chickens!!! I have decided on three, where I am getting them from has Buffs as well as a lacewing. So.... my daughter wants a buff, (she will be paying for it and I shall be looking after it)!!! so I will get another buff and hopefully have the lacewing. She will be a different colour and so be an 'odd ball' to pal up with Dusty my other 'odd ball'! That is the plan. Whether it will come together - who knows with these birdies? We are hoping to go over and see them this coming week. Watch this space! My daughter and her OH came over yesterday and have erected the 'quarantine' coop, so it's all ready. My existing girlies have inspected it, and walked away unimpressed!

Just a couple of tweeks to do to the second coop/play area and we are all set to get the new baby girlies. It has been arranged that we go and get them on Wednesday week. My daughter is buying one Buff, I am having one Buff and the Lacewing. The Lacewing is still an Orpington, so we will have all the same breed. My lot are still in various stages of 'broody' so perhaps when we get six at least SOMEBODY will lay. These babies though probably won't lay til the Spring or near the end of Winter more hopefully. Pictures to follow when we get the girlies.
