Shirls Crop issues are so hard to work out, it could be as simple as a blockage or a secondary problem where the digestive system shuts down to something else going on inside. I have a hen with similar issues at the moment. I do hope the LP and maggots work some magic and her crop continues to slowly empty. If you find over the next day or 2 it's not and appears to be backing up I would stop with the maggots and pop her back to your vet. Got my fingers crossed for you

Thanks for the advice @sophiemasie. I have an appointment already booked with the vet for Thursday. I didn't realise I should be giving her LP as well, that is such a problem for both of us!!!

Thanks for asking sophiemaisie. Sorry, haven't been on for a bit. Unfortuntely had to take Dusty to vet on Tuesday. My usual vet here where I live only works on Thurs and Fri and I didn't think Dusty would make it to her Thursday appointment. She had anaesthetic and they cut her open and flushed her out. I am pleased to say she has come through ok. She has lost a lot of weight, wouldn't eat maggots or pellets and she was getting weaker and weaker so I 'bit the bullet' and went to an avian vet that I have used before, in Dover. It's a 50 mile round trip and I had to go there twice in one day!! Fortunately the second time, to collect her and bring her home. She's on two liquid meds and one tablets. What fun!!! Not!!! She's on: Enrofloxacin twice daily for 7 days, Amox capsules(which must be short for Amoxacillin? ) twice a day for 7 days and Metacam (for dogs!!) once a day for five days. The first day of meds was a complete disaster!!! But we have mastered things now and it is a lot easier. She is looking good, and doing what chickens do. Back for check up tomorrow and stitches out next Tuesday. She still won't eat pellets but she eats egg and greens etc. Big sigh of relief.

Aww poor Dusty! She has been through the mill hasn't she? I do hope she is on the road to recovery really soon - at least its not something stupid like 3 weeks of meds!

Poor girl . Sometimes you have no choice with these things, she evidently wouldn't have made it without intervention, so pleased she came though Shirls, keep getting better Dusty

Hopefully that will be the end of Dusty's woes. Not good that it required surgical intervention, but at least now it is not dragging on. Get better soon, Dusty, pleeeease.

Sorry Shirls, I missed this about the vets and things. Anyway I'm glad to hear Dusty is now on the mend. They certainly keep you on your toes. Get well soon Dusty.

She's not quite out of the woods yet jellybean, progress is slow. I phoned the vet this morning to ask if it was absolutely necessary that she go for a check up today (50 mile round trip remember), stress of being caged and all that, hot in the car too. Anyway, the person I spoke to said we didn't have to go, but she would get the vet to ring me. I'm still waiting!! I will phone a little later on to make next weeks appointment to have the stitches out and hopefully speak to the actual vet that performed the op.

Thanks for asking samwiseg. We are still working on getting Dusty better aand I am pleased to say, I do believe, fingers crossed, that we are getting there. She is still not eating pellets so now I have to disguise them in yoghurt or water them down to make a mash mixed in with vegetables. Tody is the first day of her not just pooing fluid, and there is substance to her poo. So she must be getting some nutrition down her. She spent 36 hrs (an overnighter) at the vets to be crop fed as she was losing weight so quickly. She hadn't eaten properly for about 3 weeks, so I was desperate to get some food into her. Hopefully we are on the 'up' now. She is acting more her normal naughty self now too, so she must be feeling better. On the menu today we have cabbage, egg and sweetcorn with some pellet mash. I have to give her breakfast and lunch to make sure she has some food intake. The two older girlies are eating this stuff too, so I hope they don't start putting on weight as they are big enough already! Needless to say Dusty won't come near me, especially morning and evening: she remembers I used to give her medicine at these times. And they say chickens are stupid!!
