I'm wondering how many of these things could have been related to dear Ian's age? Of course I am not a vet so what do I know. That's a very good point, Marianne ... I have no idea what would be common to find in a 10+year old budgie. Just hoping hoping hoping that the inflammation is something other than megabac ...

He could have had a bacterial infection or some illness because he was old and more prone to illness.
Which reminds me I must book a flu jab soon.

Here's hoping (for Eric's sake) that it was something relatively minor (i.e. compared to megabacteria) ...

That is an upsetting list to read, Rose, though as already said, possibly not too surprising given his age. Either way, it sounds like Ian was being a very brave soldier indeed. I salute him.

As Marianne very astutely pointed out, how much of all Ian's problems could be due to his age? You will never know, but it sounds to me that Ian passed on in possibly the easiest, least stressful or painful way possible for the poor fella. Fingers crossed for a clean bill of health for Eric. xx

I've been offline for a few days so I'm just catching up on all the posts.
I'm so sorry to hear about Ian, you did all you could for him.
I hope Eric is OK and coping alright without him.

Hindsight is, of course, a wonderful thing, but if I'd known what would happen, I'd have asked the vet to put the dear little boy to sleep when I brought him back in on Monday morning. He was clearly a lot worse than he'd been on Sunday, and at over ten years old ... Not that I blame anyone (i.e. the vets or myself), because there did seem to be hope ... His last week or so was pretty rubbish, but in a span of ten and a half years, he was pretty lucky. And at least it wasn't one long decline after Marshie left us: he had some happiness with Eric, if only for 2 or 3 weeks.

I am so sad reading this, poor Ian and poor you and Eric. Times like this are just so, well, horrible - I can't think of another word to describe it. Look after yourself x
