Bad news! I haven't been on here for a while I have been very busy. Back before Christmas we had a severe storm while I was at work I got home and the cage had been damaged the side lock had come off and mum and dad were gone. I have been hand raising 5 babies since two weeks old and they are 8 weeks this week, all babies are very healthy and I am trying to wean them. They are eating millet and a bit of seed and soaked pallet and pureed fruit and veg which they dont really like but the one thing I am having trouble with is getting them to drink water so I am still hand feeding morning and night and have cut out their day feed for them to eat and drink on their own I have put a large bowl of water on the cage floor and they play with it but I dont think they are really drinking it so I am syringing water for them during the day. Does anyone have any ideas how to get them to drink on their own? Pics of bubs

(This is the little one I thought was going to die last born who is now the biggest and does not stop eating as you can tell by his face)

All you can do is encourage them to drink, play with the water, let them know it is there. If they are playing with it, I really don't think you have much to worry about. They probably are drinking some while they play, even though it might not look like it. At eight weeks, they should be fully weaned, flighted and ready to leave home (if they were going to). Get them onto an adult's diet, try not mushing their fruit and veggies - more veggies than fruit as well, they don't need the sugar, either grate or cut chunks of raw veggies for them. A little millet, but get them onto what you were feeding the parents. They don't need to be pampered any more, or they will never grow up.

Ahh sorry you lost mum and dad but you have done an excellent job as a substitute parent. Where abouts are you, was your cage outside?

We are in Melbourne VIC AUS, yes the cage was undercover under a gazebo in the back yard it has been really hot here too hot for inside the gazebo is down the side of the house where it gets a natural wind flow the birds love it outside and are really quiet when they were inside they didn't like it, but the babies are now inside.
I have tried grating all their veggies and have cut them up but they are not touched and they go off easily in the heat, there is one little budgie that has always had trouble with feeding and I thought I was going to lose him as he just kept refusing to eat he is under weight and he just wants to be fed he is a very sooky boy and very very affectionate (a mummy's boy) all the others go flying off around the house and he will just sit with me every where i go he goes I have a very close bond with him and he will be staying with me, all the others eat the seed and pick at the other things but he doesn't seem to at all and he doesn't go near the water he is healthy as long as I feed him.

I am so sorry about what happened to the parents; that must have been an awful shock for you.
Well done on hand rearing the babies, that is an job well done indeed.
I have four 3 month old babies and they have been seperated from their parents for a good 6 or 7 weeks. It took a while for them to figure out how to crack seed but they did start with millet and veg. Once one does it the others will follow suit and copy.

Yes I have made a friend for life I could not part with him even if I wanted to I have named him Romeo he sits a lot with one other budgie when he is in the cage but it is a girl, the first two born are girls and the last three born are boys. I want to keep the first born and Romeo but will it be a problem in the future being a boy and girl will they try to mate even if I dont put a nestbox or anything in for them? I just know he will be lonely when I go to work and he and the female get along really well.
Yes clt80 my dad was at my house most of the day painting then all of a sudden a massive storm hit he had too leave and he said he checked on the birds before he left and all was good the storm was over by the time I got home from work the cover was ripped off and the side cage door was hanging off by the hinge and they were gone, I was absolutely devastated I had to take the babies to work with me for a week because they were feeding every 4 hours and we had booked to go away for 4 days over the Christmas period so i took them with me, they traveled a lot and now they are not scared of anything they are very easy going birds. Yours did wean very young wow. I put one of my older hens in with them when they were just over 4 weeks old so hopefully they would copy her and she would show them how to eat and drink but poor miss bossy copped it from all of them they didn't want her in their cage at all.
Should I try and cut out the morning feed and let them be self sufficient for the whole day?

Yes, I really do think so. clt80's babies are what would normally happen. Obviously being hand-reared in your case is a little different, with no one to show them what to do, but they really should be self-sufficient and fully fledged by now. Your mistake was probably putting a hen in with them to show what to do, rather than a cock. Generally, once they start leaving the nest box, this is when Dad picks up the slack and starts earning his keep. Do you have a gentleman bird who might be prepared to help a few youngsters out???
