aww thanks for your great replies it has put my mind at rest that i am not the only person to feel this way and that there are nice people out there.
Can i ask though how do you say to someone once they are already looking at the birds that you dont think they are suitable in a nice way as not to offend them?

aww thanks for your great replies it has put my mind at rest that i am not the only person to feel this way and that there are nice people out there. Can i ask though how do you say to someone once they are already looking at the birds that you dont think they are suitable in a nice way as not to offend them? I've always taken the soft stance and say "Look, these guys are a bit more high maintenance than your bog standard bird, they need the training topups, they need the exercise routine, and they need the extended diet, I'd highly recommend doing a bit more reading up and maybe coming back later on? I've always got plenty in the pipeline and I want to make sure pet and person get the best possible outcome." Always guide them somewhere they can learn, nothing worse than telling someone they don't know enough and not suggesting how to change it. Hence my website, infact, I ask people to thoroughly read it before coming to see my birds so I know they have some base knowledge. There's often kids involved too and I always get the parents to get the kids reading good literature as well as the parents, it helps weed out the kids that want on whim if they can't have something immediately. At the end of the day I want the best for my birds, and like any shopkeeper can, you can refuse service for any reason you see fit if you don't wish to sell someone something. You'll always get the odd offended customer but that's the kind of person you wouldn't want to see your animals go to anyway. So it works even. Understanding to your requirements is usually a good indicator that they are understanding to all beings, including what they wish to buy. S.

Excellent reply Soph, I take exactly that approach too - most people are pretty good about it & as you say, if someone is offended after such a gentle discussion then they surely aren't right or ready to be having one of your babies
