Brand New Budgie

Hello everyone.
I have just bought a baby budgie, yesterday. He is still settling in, so I have no photos yet π. We have named him Fionn, which in Irish means blonde or fair (he is cream/ yellow). The breeder says he is male, but I reckon at 8 weeks, it might be too early to tell for sure. I also have 2 cockatiels, Alfie and Bunny, both male, as well as 2 cats and a dog.
I havent had a budgie since I was a child, and though she was well cared for, she was mean and bad tempered - my fault I'm sure. So I want to do a better job this time, creating a tame, confident bird.
Fionn was parent raised - his wings are clipped, though I would wish they weren't. I won't be doing them again. The breeder suggested that I just grab him and hold him for a bit each day to make him tame - but that goes against my instincts, I don't t think I should force him. I know if I tried that with my tiels they would be nervous wrecks.
He is currently in quarantine away from my resident birds, and he will be for at least 30 days, so that gives me some bonding time. Hopefully I can pick up some useful tips here βΊοΈ

Welcome to the forum sarahfionn. We look forward to hearing about your pets. I have 2 dogs and 2 budgies myself. There is also a section on here for other pets so you can write about your others if you wish.

Nice to hear from you, Sarah. Go through the pinned threads for some helpful hints, particularly "General" and "Health" sections. Post us up a photo and I am pretty sure we will be able to confirm or not the gender of your budgie. Oh, and disregard the " just grab him and hold him for a bit each day to make him tame" advice, as your instincts are spot on. You are not a bird-newbie; you know how to read them so good luck with your little Fionn.

Hope when he settles we can see some pictures.

Welcome! Regarding the hen that was well cared for and mean and bad tempered, sometimes hens can be like that, but I love that personality of theirs You're definitely right to trust your gut instinct and not hold your budgie for a little bit of time a day to make them tame, that'll just make them very wary and nervous of you.
