Hi there, So glad to have found this forum - I am reading through lots of previous posts as I am a *new budgie mummy* as of yesterday - when I brought this wee guy - or girl - it could be a girl - home with me from the pet shop. I am a huge animal lover, but this is my first bird. Anything you can tell me about my new friend would be most appreciated. He was bred by a local minister and is about 9 weeks old, I think. I bought the Hagen L01 (there was only a choice of two cages and this was the biggest). I have ordered new natural perches, toys, a java branch for the outside top of the cage, swings and a landing perch. He is already stepping up! But is he a 'he' or a 'she'? I thought he was a boy - but when I look at the camera pictures, I think I can see white round the nostrils... Please solve the mystery so we can name our feathered friend... Many thanks!

Welcome to you and your new little budgie!
I am going to say he's a boy because his cere looks purple to me. If he's 9 weeks then in a month or even a couple of weeks, his cere should go blue.

Aww thank you both for the help and the warm welcome! I think we have a name - Sheldon! My son's suggestion lol. He's so cute!

Sheldon is definitely a Sheldon, not a Shelley. A very handsome little fella he is, as well. (Isle of Lewis ... I imagine it is a tiny bit chilly, this time of year?? Hope Sheldon has his winter woolies on. )

Thank you, Hezz. He is adorable - and responding so well to training. I am thinking of going to get his green brother (from the same nest). (The pet shop here rarely has baby budgies - they order from a wholesaler so quality is random and can be poor). Sheldon is the exception as he was bred locally - when I told my son he had a brother he said we have to get him... At this rate I will end up with a flock...

Oh and yes it is a bit chilly here but actually not too bad (7 degrees). Lewis is always slightly warmer than the mainland - something to do with the gulf stream. We tend not to get extreme heat or extreme cold. We live by the sea so rarely have frost or snow. But we do get lots of strong wind! Sheldon is cosy with me in the office

There will be an average of 5C here today where I am, so you're slightly warmer!

Well, I'm sure it will feel warmer in London lol. We have a significant wind chill factor outside...

I read the "Lewis trilogy" by Peter May. I thoroughly enjoyed the books, and his description of Lewis was stunning. A place I would love to visit.

The first Peter May book is very accurate in particular. I live about ten minutes from the swimming hut where the first murder happened. You can also see the green-roofed hut when you drive across the moor. I think they do a tour of book locations in the summer. Hope you're cosy and ready before the snow comes ffiscool

Perruche Bleue, have you gone back to get the little birdy brother?? jellybean, seems our library has #1 and #3. Will have to ask the question; they are always renewing.
