Well, as skysmum was saying the other day, these birds just keep throwing things at us to worry us and make us grey before our time. Something different yet again! It's Dusty now, my (not so) little grey fluffball of a chicken! Her face has swollen up, both sides, so off to the vet we went this morning. Went to the local one, and they aren't avian, but we got the usual BAYTRIL for 7 days, that is the only antibiotic they have in stock for birdies. Fortunately for Dusty her eyes aren't weeping and her nose is clear, so fingers crossed it's bacterial or an allergy to something. The other chooks seem ok - at the moment! Btw, got our first egg of the season, but unfortunately Mummy broke it whilst cleaning out the coop! It certainly looked a nice one too. Hopefully we shall get another one now tomorrow! So it's Doxycycline every day for Benji (budgie)and Baytril for Dusty (chookie). Sigh!

We wondered that ffiscool, but the swelling is both sides of her face, so a tic bite would only be one side and I doubt the swelling would be so even. Vet was very non-committal as per!

Did the vet consider a sinus infection? Poor Dusty, hope she gets better soon.

It never rains but it pours Shirls. Hope the Baytril helps and Dusty feels better soon.

I also wondered about sinuses.
Hope Dusty will recover soon, poor girlie.

Here is a picture of her poor little swollen face, notice her eye and the little flappy bit bit to the left of her wattle. All the white bits are swollen. No Hezz, vet didn't mention sinuses but then she is a pretty useless vet as far as avians are concerned. If Dusty doesn't improve I will take her to the Avian vet in Dover. It's just that it is a 50mile round trip!! Dusty's face by on Flickr

could you email the vet in Dover with a photo?
they might have an idea and be able to suggest something to try, provided it doesn't get worse etc

That is a good idea ffiscool. Firstly though, the 'chicken' vet as I call her is in tomorrow at our local vet so I may phone and have a word with her. She's usually pretty good with chickens!!

Called in to see the 'chook vet' on the pretext that I needed confirmation that the Baytril dose was correct, as it was/is such a large dose and showed her the picture of Dusty on my phone. No comments at all except that the dose was correct.
Couldn't give the medication yesterday, had to be out from early in the morning, while it was dark (!!), so Dusty has had just 4 doses so far. Presumably she should have 7, there's not much more in the bottle so it will probably only do 7. Her face is still swollen. Fingers crossed the next few days it will improve.
Benji goes to the Avian vet in Dover on Wednesday, so I may well have to take Dusty too!!! That WILL be fun!! Fingers crossed though that it won't be necessary.

Dusty has ALWAYS been a sickly chook. I'm always having to give her meds for something or other.
