Hello, new to the forum. We got a new young budgie in January to keep our 1 year old male (Pebbles) company. When we got her/him we thought male. But over the last 7 weeks his/her cere changed every day. It went from bright pink to purple to white to pink again. And we still don't know if we added a boy or girl to the household. These are pictures from the last week. Hopefully some more experienced ppl can help out

Hi and welcome yvonne Too tricky at this time for me to tell really but there are other more experienced members on here that should be along shortly to help give you a more definitive answer! But still for what its worth, based on my limited experience I would say hen because from you pics it seems she has some white rings round her nares

Thank you for the welcome And yes, you might be right about Pineapple being a hen. Yesterday both birds moved in together (new flight cage) and she has been in charge of the food bowls right away. Very feisty when it comes to food, luckily the rest of the time they're very sweet together.

It is hard to tell from the photos but I’m leaning towards hen as well. A beautiful one at that 😊

I see she has a blue tummy and not clear wing markings. It may not apply then, how the cere looks as to whether a girl or boy.
Someone will know. But very pretty

A bit hard to tell with those photos. Closer (head shots) and on macro setting if using a camera. I'm not leaning towards hen based on what I can see.

Thanks for the input so far. He or she has been a mystery, cere has been switching between solid pink to violet and every shade in between. Today was a light pink day I will try to get a close up without cage in the picture tomorrow.

I'm still saying boy. (Solid pink to grey, as you mention in your previous post sounds just like a boy in different lights.) What a cute pose.

Thanks again for the help This bird really keeps us wondering, behavior wise he is so bossy and trying to rule the new cage and food. Poor Pebbles (definitely male) doesn't mind though, he's happy to have a friend.

Pineapple and Pebbles sound wonderful. What a very pretty birdie Pineapple is. Can you post a picture of Pebbles too, we love birdie pictures.

6 weeks later Pineapple is going through a molt, he is growing new wing feathers and so much fluff everywhere His markings are all over the place, makes for a very interesting looking birdie. Just curious if his cere is ever going to turn more blue, or is it staying this pretty violet color?

That will depend on his mutation. I'm thinking he is a recessive pied, in which case no, his cere will not go the deep blue of other mutations.
