Hi again. I’m introducing a nestbox to my pair and am not sure on where to place it, high or low on the cage? I’ve bred cockatiels before and they always ‘decorated’ the outside of the box around the opening to show they’d accepted it, is that the same with budgies? Also, I have nesting material, should I put it in the box ready or let them find it and carry it to the box if/when they are ready?
TIA Sarah

Before considering breeding how long have you had the birds, how old are the birds, and have they actually bonded? Budgie hens should not be bred under 12 months and not over 3 years. If you have not long had the birds, allow them to get used to their new surroundings and each other before introducing a nest box. I'm not up on cockatiels' breeding habits but without a deal of experience in breeding budgies, it would seem that trying to force the issue just doesn't work. Budgies do not decorate the nest box area; the hen will go in and out of the box and start to spend more and more time in it.
Most flight cages have a breeding box door, but if you have a choice, higher rather than lower.
