Thought I would part-cook the bolognaise sauce hubby is having for dinner tonight. Too busy reading interesting forums though and I forgot about it even though I could hear a strange noise coming from the kitchen. It is well and truly burnt and my cooking pot doesn't look all that great either (Kitchen doesn't smell too great )

Oh as a pensioner myself I never leave the kitchen unattended now when I'm cooking because I tend to forget . oh hum, drawbacks but also advantages, the advantages are....err.....short term memory loss, can't remember

I meant to stay in the kitchen, but had to have a perch somewhere as my back was groaning. Hmm, can't think of any advantages either millie

I always set a timer to go off when things are done, even if it's just a 5 minute wait!

Yes I should use a timer with a loud bell on it:)
I'm not really a timer person - Mum taught me to supervise cooking at all times and go by how it tasted, looked, smelled &etc - she was one of those people who knew her measurements by experience (probably learned through trial and error) and I think I tend to be the same. I knew I shouldn't have left the kitchen. (I don't have measuring devices and with every cooker I have had that had a timer .. well, the timers were never used).
We had smoked haddock, poached eggs and chips instead:)

This is why I never leave the kitchen when I'm cooking, as I know I'll cremate something, set something alite, or generally make a bauble of it! I end up distracted by something, then side tracked by a side thought, then I can't remember what the first thing was so I sit there considering for a bit, then I think nevermind I'll remember it later once I've done... what was I doing..? Oh god I forgot to put the washing away... oh gawd the wardrobe needs organising... ad lib until what I was boiling is dry and I have a pasta sculpture I could sell in Tate Modern with artistic flares of burn patterns to emphasise that whotsit I was doing before I got thingied by the whatchmagooger and... oh walnuts I'm out of butter anyway!! I have my own "Don't Leave Unattended" sign for myself! Soph.

But had an aunt who could whip up a batch of scones in her best dress and pearls and still be ready to go to the ball...........I make a mess! I do clean up, but the mess comes first. This is why I never leave the kitchen when I'm cooking, as I know I'll cremate something, set something alite, or generally make a bauble of it!

Soph. It gets worse as you get older! I often turn up in a room to do one thing, see another, forget the first plus whatever I had on the go before hand, half way through think of something else needs doing, go there and hopefully run into whatever I had started 3 hours ago........ after all that I think I need a rest..... That's the most I have remembered for a long time.

I forget things I'm cooking all the time. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to work the complicated inbuilt timer on the oven. Drives me batty.
I also forget when I'm running the bath. Fortunately there's a valve thing that gets rid of the excess water rather than having it run all over the floor. I just get distracted doing too many things at once, especially as I also work from home.

I bought one of those. But it only worked one time in three. Which really means it didn't work at all. The timer went around, but the bell didn't go off. Bought another, different type. Same thing. So I gave up.

Both my PC and TV have Cooking Timer Apps installed, so I never worry at all

We don't have an oven time. I just use one of those wind up ones. My mum used to use one of those all the time, but set to the same time so it ended up wearing out but only if set for that particular time. I would get a digital one if I got any - we used to use them all the time in the lab - they are great, just replace a battery every now and then. And now they would be about the same price as a winding one.
