Hi, I purchased my new buddy little over a month ago from PetSmart. The wings aren't clipped & 4 days ago the bird flew into a mirror. It looked like a decent hit, but didn't knock the bird out of the air, but definitely stunned the bird. Now there seems to be a little crusty on the birds right nostril & I noticed that the birds left nostril will open & close but the right doesn't. You can see a little crusty in the 4th picture. The bird also seems to sneeze a few times a day. I've only heard the bird chirp & squak (while flying) I would appreciate any advice & an excellent opinion on the sex of the bird. Thank you in advance!

From what you have said I would at this time just keep an eye on the nostril, hopefully it will improve. As long as the little bird carries on as a little budgie should, eating and drinking etc., and doesn't appear hurt in any other way. If you are really worried then perhaps a vet visit would be a good idea?
Very handsome little birdy, I would think a hen, but I'm not good at genders. Have you given him/her a name yet?

It looks like a hen to me, too, so maybe the crustiness is normal. As long as the bird is acting normal, everything might be alright.

This is my 1st time owning a bird...I’ve had aquariums for over a decade. The bird is eating & drinking normal. The bird steps up & will hang out on a PVC stand next to my spot on the sofa. Goes crazy for millets. Named the bird Yoda; may need to rename to Yodette, lol. Also had a follow up question, do most ppl cut off the band afterwards? Seems like it doesn’t serve a real purpose anymore.

Hello again chikybo. I wouldn't cut the ring off myself, it can be quite difficult to do apparently. Does it have numbers on it? The numbers would show who bred the bird and the year it was born. So it may have to be Yodette then? he he.

If you are going to remove the leg ring please purchase some proper leg ring cutters like these:

Anyone else have an opinion on the gender?

Yodette is my opinion, but not an expert.

Hen. It is very easy to break a leg removing a metal band. You really are best to get a vet to do it.

Thank you....I will call the vet today....my wife called last week & they said they wouldn’t cut it off without an initial checkup, is that common?

I would say they are looking at lining their pockets by charging a 'check up' fee as well as to remove the leg ring. That's what vets would do where I live!

I'm inclined to agree, Shirls. If it were a larger parrot, one who might be carrying a microchip, or even a parrot of a rarer variety, then I would be tempted to think that they were being cautious and making sure the bird was in the correct hands. Not so, with a budgie.
