Are they separated? if so why? Basil went up to 69g before he died, most of it was his lump but the thing is I don't think he was fat, because I could feel his keel bone He stopped being able to fly, he'd just plummet to the floor. So I had to keep him locked in. Poor Ben not having his friend to fly about with.

No they're not separated Marianne, they even went to the vet together. I meant that because Max isn't very active, flying about and playing and being his normal mischievous self, Ben is just sitting with him for company. They are sitting together on the cargo net at the minute. Think Max just feels crappy at the minute and wants to rest and sleep. Neither of them are used to that.

Oh, poor Max. I hope he starts to feel better soon.
To be honest, it's a dreary day here and mine are just sitting about too.

Can be caused by a crap diet that is just seed, seed bells and millet.
But mostly it's genetic, that is my belief.

Max certainly has a good diet, as did my Basil.

Neither of them touched the dried Milk thistle, they investigated, but never touched it. I held some in my hand too, because at night I always bring something and they eat it from my hand, but NO, wouldn't touch it. Saw Ben drinking the water with the Avipro, I could see the look of YUCKKK on his face.

jellybean, I'm sorry to be reading that Max has liver problems. While I don't like to dispute what the vet has given you to feed the boys, if they aren't going to eat it then there is no benefit, obviously. I like the milk thistle drops, I'd swear by them in fact. Each time I've started a bud on the drops they have perked up almost over-night. I'm not sure about the avipro; depending on what is in it, you might be able to mix the two, but perhaps drop a drop of MT onto some of Max's grass?? I'm sorry, I'm about to head off, running out of time. For seed, look to feeding them a finch seed mix - usually the same seeds without the flax/linseed and/or groats.

Milk thistle is very good support for a damaged liver. Your avian vet will decide if this is an appropriate therapeutic for your bird. Make sure that any milk thistle supplement does not contain ethyl alcohol as a base, as that can potentially intoxicate a small bird and alcohol can also further damage the liver.
I copied this from "Beauty of Birds" the vet mentioned this today, hence the reason she gave me dried. Where can I buy it without the alcohol, or how do I make sure there is no alcohol in it.
I will look at finch mixed tomorrow, I gave them fresh seed tonight and removed all the groats.

Yes, this is the same one that I use as well. I get mine from an American company since I can only source much more diluted stuff at home. I'm sure Amazon would have it, jellybean, or I get it through either Vitacost or iHerb, if that is of any help. Keep feeding them the seeding grasses, as well.

Marianne? What causes fatty liver ? They are a desert bird, evolved to fly huge distances to find their food. Regardless of how much you try, you can not come close to emulating the sort of exercise that a wild budgie achieves in a day. So a sedentary life-style, coupled with a constant supply of food on hand is not conducive to our birds staying trim and fit. It is a problem with all pet birds, just more so with those who have evolved to travel over huge areas for food and water.

Thanks Hezz , I have just ordered the one which sweetpea kindly gave me the link for from ebay, I paid extra postage to hopefully have it by tomorrow. How do I administer it? Should I give them that as well as the Avipro plus? Or should I stop the Avipro? Can Ben have it too as they share food, water etc? I am just about to go to Haith's website to see about a change of seed, you recommended a Finch blend, I will see what they have. Thank you all for your help and support. Edit:- Just ordered the Foreign Finch Mix from Haith's.

Agreed Hezz, but I still think that the inbreeding causes genetic conditions such as fatty liver and tumours. All of my birds have the same opportunities to fly about in my house, some get ill and some do not.
