Hi, We now have our new boy budgie Got him from a local breeder..he is lovely. How long will it take him to settle in to his new cage? got him last night and he was a bit frantic when we put him in the cage, but settled down. He is now just sitting on his perch not doing very much. He makes tiny little clicking noise now and agian and opens his beak. We got a new cage for him and it has seed and water dishes...will he know to go and get drink out of the dish if he has maybe been used to a bottle on the cage, or should I get a bottle for the water? Any advice welcome as we are new to budgies!! Attachments:

Hi there, he's (or maybe she, not sure from the photo, is the cere brown or blue?) a gorgeous little fellow. He may take a few days to settle down, perhaps more. Regarding the water, yes I would get a bottle but also put a small dish (a little ramekin would be ideal) on the floor with water in it. Also scatter some seed on the floor and hang some millet near his perch. Are you planning on getting him some nice branches to perch on? Does he have a name yet?

Thanks for the qucik reply.. I have just put a litle dish of water on bottom of cage and scattered some seeds..will need to go and get some millet and a bottle for water at pet shop later today!! he is a boy and no name yet, he was for my daughter and she cant decide on name...possible Sky...or maybe Frosty or Fizzy, will let you know!! Can you tell me if it is better to have wire cage on bottom of cage or flat surface.....the cage we got was called the Vision MO2 model and it has deep base with wire cage at bottom with about approx 2" gap between botom and the cage...hope this makes sense

Take the wire tray out of the bottom of the cage, and just cover the cage bottom with several sheets of newspaper. Or cover that wire base with the papers. Depends how your cage works. You can then just fold and remove one sheet of newspaper when soiled to make cleaning much easier. The wire base bars just get dirty and are then difficult to clean.

I have two large vision cages. I leave the wire at the bottom but cover it with newspapers.
I replace all papers every night and cover them again with two sheets every morning so that each morning and each night they are not walking on poo.

Hi rebrools He/she is too cute...Im new to budgie keeping to but this forum is FANTASTIC,EVERYONE on it is so helpful and friendly so you have come to the right place for advice.. I also have the vision cage but i took out all the plastic perches and now only have natural branches,i have a few java perches and also a flat wood perch which my budgie Elfie likes to rest on (i bought all of mine on line)...I put the java branch higher up than all the rest and next to his water and that is where he likes to go at night to sleep...When Elfie is comfe and happy he grinds his beak and makes the same clicking noises as yours....I hope you have as much fun with your budgie as i am with mine and its amazing to see them become more and more confidant as time goes on...

Hi Moogie, Thanks, can you just use natural branches which have been dried out or would you suggest Java Braches? I will need to get a flat wood one too..sounds good..do you use bottle for water or a dish?

I didnt make any of my branches as you have to know which woods are 100% safe for your little one,i have done loads of research and if you check out this forum there is a section on safe perches but as i did not want to use the plastic ones that came with the cage i just bought the natural ones to sve time, maybe in time i will start to make my own perches but for now it was easier to buy them...If you google wood budgie perches then you will find some,i got my java branches from herbsdad on ebay and they are lovely and not to expensive,i dont think you HAVE to have flat perch but i know Elfie likes it for a little rest...I have all natural perches as they are good for budgies little feet plus i felt that this is what he would have landed on if in the wild...i have a bottle for Elfie which i have placed by the highest branch in the cage..i use the two dishes that came with the cage for food,i fill one dish with two teaspoons of seed and the other i chop up some veg and fruit...check out though which veg and fruit are safe for your budgie as not all are,Elfie still does not really eat it but i put it in every day in the hope that one day he will try it and like it,one thing he does eat is spinach leafs so maybe try this to start

Only use black and white newspapers apparently.
If not then don't expose the budgies to them.
Have them under the grate.
