Since I got my first budgie I've been buying seed from a small local pet store. I like to support businesses like this when I can and their store has loads of other bird stuff in it too so its a win-win.... Except in the 3 years I've been buying seed there, I've had 3 seed infestations! The first one was with these small beetle type things. The second time was with maggots which 'hatched' into small moths. Both of these times I contacted the store and they have been very good - replaced the infested seed and gave me extra at no cost. But today I noticed another infestation they look like the same maggots and even though the store would probably replace it all, I just don't want my birds eating seed that could have these nasty things crawling round. After each infestation I've replaced all my containers and when I buy the seed they weigh it out, put it in a paper bag and soon as I get home it goes straight into clean, airtight containers.
I don't think I can do any more at my end and I've totally lost trust in their seed now so I am looking for recommendations on what seed you guys give your birds.

I probably can't help you, being in Australia, but we do need to know where you live to be able to recommend suppliers.

I’ve switched to Haiths and my buds are on the global budgie seed. They also have egg food and I give them the budgie tonic seed a couple of times a week.

I couldn't find their budgie stuff but I have now and there's so many to choose from! Also, has anyone used Versela-laga Prestige Budgie seed?
Ingredients: Plata millet (52%), red millet (16%), silver millet (12%), oat kernels (9%), canary seed (5%), linseed (3%), cards thistle (2.5%), niger seed (0.5%).

I use Haiths Tip Top, which was recommended by them as a good all round seed mix. It contains tonic and no groats. I feed fresh greens with this and have never had any issues. I wouldn’t trust open seed that is measured out from anywhere, anything could have got mixed in it.

Hannah, you can freeze Haiths seed,. I just fill an airtight container with enough for a month and freeze the rest in bags that last approx a month. It’s very clean seed, you will notice the difference.
