Thanks all for your kind thoughts. I've lost 4 birds in the last year (5 if you count the poor unfortunate baby someone found in their garden and gave me) Torn between getting rid of a cage (I have 4 cages and 6 birds) or rehoming a couple of budgies. Pretty distraught today. The evening routine will be tough. I was so used to Custard hassling me for his evening millet Kicking myself for not hearing him fall from his perch last night, normally I come in and check on them at 3 or 4 am to make sure the temperature is okay, but I was so tired I did not wake. I hate this guilt, every time one passes away

Don't beat yourself up Marianne, as well as the birds you also have a baby to look after, that's a full time job in itself. You have given so many of these little birdies a loving home, Custard, as well as all your other birds, know they are loved.
Thinking of you.

You can’t blame yourself. If you had checked on them say at 3 or 4am, it could have happened ten minutes later. You’d never have known, short of staying awake all night every night.
Custard probably lasted as long, due to your care. He had a great time with you

Don’t feel guilty Marianne Marlow. You couldn’t have known and nobody could have predicted the time. I felt guilty over Squawk and the nibble of bread he had the night before he passed. You were all so kind to me and reassured me, now it’s your turn to be reassured. Custard had a great mum that loved and still loves him deeply.

I was looking at your photo of Custard when he first came to you, Marianne. He probably thought he had already died and gone to heaven - look at all the lovely things in his cage, plus two big sprigs of millet!! He was living the life of Riley after you took him in. xxx

He even used to hold his cage up to him to put him in for the evening. He only had to rehome Custard because he needed to take care of elderly parents up north.

I can relate to the guilt and heartache too. It can take its toll. I'm giving mine the best I can but I'm not rehoming anymore unless someone is desperate. My back garden is like a graveyard.

So sorry to read about custard. We've lost 2 dogs and 2 buds as well as family in the last 18 months. Try not to beat yourself up too much which is easier said than done I know. Just try to do the best you can on any given day, may not be as good as previous days but that doesn't matter, just 1 day at a time hth

It's just so upsetting isn't it Absolutely yes, and it can take a while to come to terms with what has happened. I have seen some terrible places where budgies have been kept, ones I've driven to and paid to bring home with me; absolute squalor and total neglect. Take comfort in that Custard's life was enriched by being with you. It doesn't take away the heartache, but it may give you a little solace knowing that he had such a good quality of life with you, simply because you are kind and loved him.
