That is not good news, but hopefully the meds work for Bobby.

The amphotericin B arrived...but...much confusion at the vets this morning as to the correct dosage because the amount of liquid (0.2ml twice a day) seemed very high but my vet phoned the Dover vet who confirmed that he was giving that exact same dosage to a budgie currently in their care. He also stated that, in their experience, they find budgies do 'quite well' on amphotericin B. I have read such differing reports on its effectiveness so I'm trying to focus on the good ones.
Bobby has now had his first dose. I was determined to get him started as quickly as possible and I didn't add anything to make it more palatable. Both vets suggested adding something sweet such as concentrated orange juice or honey but I had a brief look online to see what others have done and I found two sources saying that nothing sweet should be added if the bird is tackling a yeast infection as the sugar will only make it worse. I have no idea if this drug is going to work. I know the odds are hugely stacked against Bobby but it's the only option left. My goodness, how did I become so smitten by this crazy little bird? We all absolutely adore him and whilst we're bracing ourselves for a bad outcome, we are also trying our hardest to remain really positive.

You're right not to add anything sweet.
I found that Sky would eat hardboiled egg, I mashed it for him.
Also tonic seed.
We did not manage to cure him, but he did get another 3 months of quality life before he passed away..
But Sky was 12 years old.

My heart is breaking. Darling Bobby is now in such a sorry state and I can't bear having to try and get this vile medicine into him every day. I love him so much and it is the most horrendous thing watching him decline. He is such a strong little character and has put up such an extraordinary fight but he is now just sitting silently on his perch with his head down, his eyes closed and his tail bobbing. The house feels ghostly without his constant chattering. We have given him one last batch of medicine this morning and we are going to see if, by some miracle, he picks up at all today. If not, we have made the heart wrenching decision to take him to the vet tomorrow to put him to sleep and put an end to this hideous journey. I have read a thread here about euthanising budgies at home but we just can't bring ourselves to do it.
He is a truly special creature and has taken over our lives in the short time he has been with us. He is always into everything we're doing. Every time I turn on the kitchen tap, he swoops over for a quick shower and a splash. Every time I get out a saucepan, he flies over so he can peck at his reflection in the side. He chirps and chats away endlessly and has such a huge range of vocabulary, constantly making us all laugh. He hasn't spoken for two days now. The last thing he said was 'everybody loves me', which completely floored me. Of course I know he doesn't know the meaning of what he's saying but it is true - everyone who has met him adores him. My goodness, why do we put ourselves through this? It is ridiculously painful. And all over a crazy little bird. I guess the only thing I can say is that it is better to have loved and lost than to never love at all.

I wasn’t going to answer this as just reading it has me in floods of tears....But I DO know how you feel and feel so so sorry for you......We were in the same position this time last year with our beloved little dog...she was 12 and it broke my heart and I still cry every time I think of her.......I vowed no more pets but we have Charlie our budgie and know I am going to go through it all again one day.......And yes it’s possible to have this great love for our little birds....you do...and I do and any true animal lovers Nothing I can say will comfort you, but I am really thinking of you and send you love and hugs. I wonder if you could just hold your little bud in a warm blanket close to you......if he will let you .....it might comfort him and he might just pass peacefully .....Th tears have started again, so I will stop, but know I am thinking of you x

It's heart breaking for me too to read this, I lost my little boy Max 9 weeks ago, so I feel your pain and your sadness. He is the luckiest boy to have you in his life, loving and caring for him.
We bring these little souls into out homes never knowing how much of out heart they actually steal.
Thinking of you, and praying too for a miracle xx

Thank you so much for your very kind words ladybird . You're right, by loving these little creatures there will be inevitable heartbreak. But that is something we are prepared to endure for the love of our amazing animals. Bobby has brought us such immense happiness and I will always think of him as a real trail-blazer as I know now that he will be the first in a long line of budgies for us as I never want to be without one of these amazing, beautiful birds in my life. I am still praying that a miracle happens but I know in my heart he needs to go.

Thank you jellybean and ffiscool for your messages. I've had little Bobby cuddled up in my hands this morning. I don't normally hold him like this as he prefers to be on my shoulder but he is very weak now and he seemed to relax a little cupped in my warm hands - and it is also helping me too to have this quiet time with him. I just can't stop crying. I am so grateful to everyone for these kind messages. What a compassionate community I have found.
