I'm currently building an aviary in the space between my 2 large, wooden, garden sheds. I am planning to cut small round holes in the walls of one of the sheds and have internally mounted shelters made from half inch thick solid pine drawers.
My 13 year old daughter thinks the birds will be too cold and will need some form of heating in the shed during the cold Winter months. Is she correct, or will the birds be okay in their boxes?

Hi mickysdad, welcome to the forum. Sorry I can't help, I'm sure some of our breeders will be along soon to help you out. Good luck with the new venture though.

Howdy and greetings. Regards the heating all I can say is that in my aviary the shed where the buds tend to sleep that I have a fan heater with a frost stat set to about 5 deg,has been ok up to now. Obviously I do close the entrance door if the weather gets very cold and have them on lock down. My main concern is wind chill and draught more than cold if that makes sense. The shed has also been lined with celotex insulation and then I have fixed 8mm ply onto the top, probably overkill on my part but works for me. As of yet there water has never been frozen. My buds were put into the aviary some time around May to help them get acclimatise so that when winter came it was not too much of a shock for them, hth

Just to add to steve05412's advice, one of our former members and budgie breeder for many years had heating in his bird room set to come on at 10 oC. They are a desert bird and evolved to withstand cold desert nights, and I think Steve's setting of 5 oC would be plenty.

Many thanks for the advice everybody, it's much appreciated. I think the point about the draught and wind-chill made by steve05412 is very relevant.
The shed where I'm intending to put the bird shelter and nesting boxes is already very well insulated with 50mm, foil-backed Kingspan insulation panels, so I think that side of things should be okay. I think the answer to the draught & wind-chill issue is to ensure there are enough wind baffles, both in the shelter and also around the circular entrances to the nesting boxes. I suppose only time will tell.
Thanks again,
Micky's Dad
