Seriously?? Wish I could have seen the show but I'm in Canada. Loved your response though. There are bad pet owners for every species, just look at puppy mills. Do not lump all pet owners together!

My next door neighbour has a 12 year old king Charles spaniel who has never been for a walk in his life and they do not have a big garden. Nobody has been around to see her over the welfare of the dog. The neighbours behind me have two Golden Retrievers who never go for a walk. Well done Sam, totally agree. Why do people like that feel the need to have a dog. To me this is a form of cruelty. I feel so sorry for all 3 of these dogs, they are missing out on so much.

Although, to be honest and it is something I have wondered about, people in my neighbourhood may well think that my dog never gets a walk either since I walk him in the dark at stupid o'clock in the morning. I do remember having a debate with someone a while back, whose birds never came out of their cage, but was concerned about a dog being confined. To me one is just as bad as the other.

I’ve seen quite a few dogs being walked whilst I’m on my way to work at 6am, so that’s quite possible. Heck, I’ve even seen people who struggle to walk because of health reasons using mobility scooters so that their dogs get a walk.
But like you’ve said, you can’t make a case about only one type of pet.
I’m not fond of cats being let outside to roam and kill wildlife if they’re able to. People would probably call me a bad cat owner for that if I had one. But I’d make sure they had plenty of play and exercise equipment inside to meet their needs.
There are always going to be good and bad pet owners. Instead of banning the keeping of certain pets, maybe they should focus on educating people about how to care for them properly. It’s never going to stop all bad treatment but it might help and doesn’t ruin the joy of pet ownership for those people who actually take very good care of their pets.

You're quite right @sillycat84 I think what I was trying to point out is that the feature was not really being reported fairly, and I for one FUME at bad bird owners. I think it harks back to one particular thing I saw a few years ago in the recession: Edwina Curry goes round to someone who is out of work, and asks them why they have a dog? Get rid of it she says, would save you a lot of money she says...to which the owner replied, "I wasn't ALWAYS out of work and you expect my kids to watch their beloved pet go somewhere else? Nevermind I am trying everything in my power to get a new job!" Its just the unfairness of it all and the one sided view instead of knowing all the facts... ...end of rant

samwiseg Reminds me of the doctors telling me to get rid of my birds when I was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, like I was just going to get rid of them on their say so. They spoke about them as if they were not living beings. Plus I rehomed the birds in the first place to help with my depression. If I had "got rid of them" then I would have been back to laying in bed past 12 each day because life had no meaning or purpose. People that never cared for animals just don't have a clue. Don't get me started on people that say animals don't have a soul!

We could go on all day on this topic could we not? I agree that there are no problem pets, but millions of problem owners. It's the owners that need training not the pets, in particular dog owners. The number of dogs that have attacked children (or adults come to that) would only attack if provoked or tormented, so don't blame the dog!
Also the number of people that get a notion to buy say, a reptile of some sort, or even a BUDGIE. No idea how to keep one, no research done, and then wonder why they have a sick pet on their hands. Oh how I could go on about this!!! End of another rant!

Indeed Shirls I think some people that get birds just want an ornament to stare at.

Shirls Reminds me of when I first came here, with no real understanding of being a pet bird owner. Although I am at least pleased that I considered my nan’s choice of cage ‘depressingly small’ when we were buying Munchy. I don’t think people do enough research into cats and dogs either. Honestly, I think it’s just too easy to pick up a pet sometimes. I don’t want to deny people pets or make it a challenge to get one, just think in some cases people need to prove they can be a competent and kind pet owner. (Mind you sometimes I also think this about having children )
