Hey everyone!
How do you all store your budgie seed?
I’ve been keeping mine in the bag it came in, sealed shut with pegs, inside one of those cereal containers. (Funnily enough I think it’s the one my granddad put my first budgie in the day he bought him whilst waiting for me to come home from school...) That has been staying in a kitchen cupboard. Then I put a small amount in a tub that I keep beside the cage. That’s not airtight and wouldn’t fit a full bag anyway.
I’m just wondering whether to keep bothering putting some in the second container. Would the seed be more likely to spoil if I was going into the bag every day? I know seeds are pretty hardy, just don’t want to ruin a large batch by mistake.

I'm similar to you. I keep the 5kg sack in a coolbox (still in it's sack)
But I decant about 500g each in two klip it boxes and keep them in the living room by Balmoral (Blithes cage)

Balmoral! Love it! Even with two I’m probably not going to need more than 2kg at a time (actually, I think I only by 1kg at a time at the moment). That can stay in the downstairs utility room cupboard. Might get a new tub for storing a small amount either in my room or in the kitchen, seeing as I’ll be washing bowls in the kitchen. Also, Anthony just sent me this. Not sure where it would fit on the forum so I’ll just leave it here.

Im the same in as much as I keep 5kg in a air tight container and then have a small plastic tub at the side of the cage which I fill up as needed.

I think your thinking is spot on, @sillycat84, regarding smaller amounts in the everyday container and keeping the bulk as fresh as possible. You can keep your bulk seed in the freezer (it doesn't actually freeze of course) and take out that smaller amount as needed.

I have a question about millet. I've had my little boy for about 4 weeks and he is not tame. I got some millet sprays from Amazon and held one near him in his cage. He wouldn't come near it. I took a piece and put it into his food container to see if he would eat it. He threw it to the bottom of his cage. I tried again to hold a spray near him but again he wouldn't come and eat it. Is it possible that it is bad or is he a picky eater?

Probably neither of these things. Most likely he was never given millet in spray form as a young bird so he has to learn that it is food. Instead of using a large spray, take the small bobbles off and offer him these, putting a couple in his seed pot. He will get the idea with time.

Hezz I was reluctant to keep exposing the large amount repeatedly to the air. I did wonder about freezing seeds, seeing as that’s what they do in seed banks, just had heard they could get damp so wasn’t sure. Might have to see how much freezer space I have in the shared fridge/freezer. Ooh, there is the smaller fridge/freezer downstairs. Maybe I could claim that.

I freeze seed ( I am sure I read that advise on here?). I just take out what I need for about a month, leave it to air for a couple of hours before I put it in the airtight box.

I always put my seed into the freezer for a couple of days when I first get it home. If you keep it in a good solid plastic bag and in an air-tight container, it shouldn't get damp at all. I find that the bag has a little condensation on it when I take it out of the freezer. I wait for it to dry and then put into an air-tight container. I put it in the freezer only in the bag, but it is there only for a few days. The more you can prevent any moisture from getting into the seed, obviously the better for your seed. I do think strong plastic bags are probably better than containers as you can seal them up tighter with less air in on the seed than loose in a container, so I would do both - bag it in a container.

Thanks Hezz! Think I’ll get some new containers. Get a nice big air tight one, then one that can hold about a month worth of seed. I could do a week’s worth but then I’d have to go into the main supply frequently.
