Hi! I have a little budgie named minty. I have had her for over a year and I have some questions about rearranging and painting my room. I would like to repaint my room to a cyan or yellow, because it is currently a very ugly salmon. I would also like to rearrange some of the furniture, and clean some of the mess! Basically, i'm trying to get my life back together...lol Im aware that paint most likely has dangerous fumes that could hurt her. (it might not, but I don't want to take any risks) It would be possible for me to keep her in the living room while paint dries, but how long should I keep her away from the paint? How long will it take to get her readjusted to my new room? Im afraid that the extreme change will scare or make her her feel homesick. I have moved my desk and her cage around a bit, but other then minor things, my room has looked almost exactly the same since I first got her. Maybe I should keep one wall the same color? keep the furniture the same for a few days before moving it? I need advice people! Another thing is that everytime I have moved stuff, she has seen and watched me do it. Will she be startled and upset if she is wheeled into a whole new room that is completely different? I know I cannot let her watch us paint, so maybe I could record her a video? If you have any ideas or advice, I would very much appreciate

If you use water based paint you should be fine so long as the room is well ventilated. Do not use anything like turps or thinners or spirit based paint around your bird. Also if you have to do any sanding move your bird to a dust free room. As for the change I wouldn’t worry about that so long as the cage remains the same there should be no issues and your bird might even enjoy the change of colour.

You can get very low odour paints these days and some maintain they are 'odour free' and they dry very quickly too. As long as you ventilate the room by having windows open everything should be fine for both of you!

Budgies are not as fickle as many like to think they are. They really couldn't care less what colour the walls are, as long as they can eat, drink, poop and play, and fly of course, they are happy. Most love to be moved from place to place - makes life much more interesting for them.
If you can still smell paint fumes in the room, leave the bird out. A week should be all that is required, but that does depend on how well ventilated the room is - open all windows and let nature do its work.
