I've left a spray in next to the food bowl. Hopefully he'll give it a go. He's eaten from my palm twice today, sat on my finger outside the cage once as pure fluke, but did stay there for quite a while, and did get on and off my arm and finger a couple of times inside the cage later on. He does like chewing me though...

That's sounds like your making good progress. Hopefully he'll stop chewing you though

Considering I've had two days at work, I'm surprised by what we managed in a day. Currently the only thing he wants that I have to offer is either food or freedom from the cage. Getting him back in is then a case of putting the base of the travel cage on the floor, waiting for him to explore it, and then sticking the top of the travel cage over him. Finally, proceed to stand like an idiot with the doors of the two cages aligned for about 10 minutes whilst Peri tries to dig out of the bottom of the cage in the back corner and goes everywhere except through the doorway. Yeah, the chewing has left red marks on my skin. Considering he doesn't really chew anything else, it was both amusing and annoying. I just kept making scolding noises at him whenever he did it. I'm sure we'll work it out. If push comes to shove, I'll just have to wait until Munchy can show Peri that millet is food.

Dean Stockwell was initially fairly easy to get back home when he was in quarantine in the guest bedroom but he stopped stepping on to our hands because he knew that meant he had to go home and he would stay on top of the curtains and fly away whenever we got near him. We then just had to leave him to come and go as he wanted. The room was budgie proofed and we were very careful whenever we opened the door but he refused all attempts at capture but would take himself home within an hour and he was always back in his cage at bedtime.

Dean Stockwell was too clever! Munchy just comes and goes as he pleases too, but will sometimes allow himself to be returned home.

@sillycat84
I love that! - he will sometimes "allow" himself to be returned home!
I usher George and Lucy in with the stick (to be honest as soon as George is in, I just have to look at Lucy and say her name and she's off in after him)
Then Blithe and Lemon will be carried in with the Taxi stick.

So have we settled on Peri being his name then @sillycat84?

samwiseg Yes, though Tom is determined to wind me up by calling him Rolo! Marianne Marlow Aww, they sound sweet! If there was a plan to leave the house I'd just shut Munchy's cage a few hours before so he'd be hungry when I needed him in. Otherwise, if he refused I'd either distract him or instigate a fight with him and then grab him. Because I work long hours when on shifts I've made my room safe for him to free fly in unsupervised, or he'd have days without exercise. But I'll need to see how Peri goes to judge what I'll need to remove or block up. He's such an explorer at the moment.

Progress is being made. Yesterday I pretty much provided seed exclusively from my palm and by the end of the day Peri was associating my hand with both food and coming out of the cage. I was in uni today and my housemate’s dad visited to deliver some furniture. Received some entertaining messages about Peri’s antics. Lectures finished early. Tom and I went in to spend time with Peri. Peri came out of the cage on my hand and happily ate seed from it. Tom snuck a millet bud onto my palm as Peri was eating and the seed was running low. He beamed it a few times and eventually started taking the seeds off it. We then proceeded to get through a sprig of about 5 buds transferring Peri from hand to hand in pursuit of the millet. He even stepped up a couple of times when he couldn’t see the millet. Lily was asleep upstairs so I brought Peri up to the living room. He was unsure about exploring but did sit on my finger for a long time, winking and blinking, and even tucked a foot up.

That all sounds like great progress, @sillycat84. Glad you have finally broken the millet barrier; there will be no going back, now. He has settled in well and truly.

He is. I didn’t get to do anything with him this morning because food prep took longer than anticipated, but hopefully uni won’t go on too long so I can spend a couple of hours with him later.

He’s so eager to be out that he’ll jump on my hand as soon as it goes inside the cage, but then doesn’t get off so all our step up training is hand to hand. Currently very obliging but that’ll probably change. Currently moved to the living room so he’s a little unsure. And the sun’s already going down.

Aww, bless his little fluffy chops. Keep up the good work, even if he does decide that he has been obedient enough already.
