Hi all. I have a pair approximately 2 and 3 years old who have recently begun mating. The hen laid 3 eggs and has been sitting on them for 21 days. I tried candling and they did not appear to be fertile but I am new to this so am not sure. My question is when should I take them from her and how should I do it so she does not become upset? Also is there something I can do to increase her chance of success next time? Thank you 😊

Did she start incubating them from the first egg, and have you candled them recently? . I would wait another 5-6 days, the last one or two could still hatch, if after this time nothing has happened get some dummy eggs and swap them, she should become fed up after a while and come out of the box herself, i would then remove the box and let her rest. If you really want a clutch, just remove the eggs after another week and she may start another clutch but if this one fails then remove the box, you could risk her health if you continue.

Thank you for your response. I don’t think she started incubating straight away. I will leave them longer then give her a good rest.

I'd leave them as is until she loses interest, once she knows they are not going to hatch, and then remove the nest box and throw out the eggs.
