Tuesday afternoon from the trees surrounding our house we heard a horrendous screech followed by a lot of action and cockatoo screeching. Raced outside to see a cockatoo on the ground and unable to fly, worse still the butcher birds were trying to attack the poor thing. Long story short, I managed to wrap him in a towel and popped him straight into the aviary with seed and water. Mum and Dad were hanging around calling out for him. Wednesday afternoon I was able to get him to the vet ... possible broken wing/possible dislocation need an X-ray to be sure, leave him and we’ll let you know the outcome in the morning after the X-ray. All this time the parents are calling, calling. ☹️ Worst thing - broken wing can’t be fixed, so best bet was to put poor bird to sleep, a dislocation could be splinted and rehab could happen at home with the parents close by. They knew where he was, are a pair that regularly come down for a feed.
Anyway, got the phone call this morning, poor little guy had PBFD, and was pts. 😢. We originally thought that he might have had an altercation with a goanna and had feathers ripped out, but the vet confirmed him as PBFD. I’m heart-sore. Mum and Dad are still looking for him as well, and that beaks my heart all over again. Rest In Peace, Squeaky’s offspring. ☹️

This is very sad indeed, poor little thing. Nature can be a beautiful thing but I always think it can be cruel as well at times. I feel for the parents.
I agree with what Sam has said, the fact you intervened means you stopped a gruesome and very painful death at the hands of the attacking birds. Your kindness gave him a chance, and helped him to eventually pass in a much gentler way. Fly high little one.

That made me cry for the little one and the parents. Thanks Hezz from all of us bird lovers for taking care of him.

It was the only thing to do, I know, and at least this way he simply went to sleep. Something was going to attack and kill him sooner rather than later as he was never going to fly, had no primary flight feathers whatsoever. I now have the added problem of disinfecting the cage and aviary and all that was in the aviary at the time. I still had everything in there from when my guys were being cared for while we were out of town, so quite a lot of stuff that wouldn't normally be there. I have good, clear instructions from the vet on what to do, but of course now the weather is giving us some showers, and I need sunshine.

That's just typical on the weather front.

Finally managed to clean down aviary and associated parts, but not looking forward to having to replace all my perches. I have acquired them over years.

Why would a good clean not be enough Hezz, is it because of the PBFD?

Sounds like it was a big job cleaning everything down fully. Hope you manage to find some new perches.
Have you seen the parents, are they still calling?
