That vet sounds awful. No empathy whatsoever, she's in the wrong job.
Respiratory conditions are not contagious - what? That sounds like nonsense.
I suppose that all you can do is (assuming it's not iodine deficiency or air sac mites) give baytril, lots of nice food to keep her spirits and weight up and just keep her as comfortable as possible.

Zero empathy Marianne, I've never met anyone as cold in my life.
No, she did say they ARE contagious, I was saying in my experience none of mine have ever caught a respiratory infection from another. They have been stand alone cases. Her knowledge is better than mine but that has been my experience.

Well I doubt you'll be seeing her again. I have met GP's like that too, I saw a Locum yesterday that was pretty terrible. I have just been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease and he gave me little to no information and didn't inform me of any further testing that I may need.
Well, with regard to the respiratory infection being contagious, perhaps it depends on if the other birds are susceptible or not and have a weakened immune system?
Either way, they're your birds and you know best.

Oh Marianne sorry to hear that you've been diagnosed with coeliac disease my friend is celiac and always worries if she eats out that there will be nothing she can eat, let alone the symptoms. Saying that I'm vegetarian and I've noticed over the past year there are more options on menus that are vegetarian, vegan or gluten free. I suppose with anything that gets diagnosed it takes a while to sink in, and unhelpful people just make it worse. Maybe with our birds when their time comes it comes, I don't know. What I do know is that Agatha isn't going without having a good chance to get better first.

So sorry clt80 that the vet was worthless in your case. It sounds like you know what you are doing and Agatha is happy. I have my fingers crossed that she will respond to your treatment. I also have celiac disease Marianne. I do most of my own cooking and there are restaurants that I know have reliable menu selections that won't make me sick. Yes, there are tasty gluten free items in the grocery stores these days but I have stopped eating many bread type items - tough if you like cookies and cake. I've been doing it for a few years. Good luck!

At least the vet gave me the baytril even if she thought it was a waste of time!

We can only try and help our beloved birds. I'm glad that you at least got baytrill. Do you think it's definitely a respiratory infection? I'm vegetarian too, have been for 32 years. It's making my gluten free protein choices harder. I hope I'll start to feel better at some point, but I also have a chronic lung condition as well as a few other issues. There is no discharge or sneezing, but the wheeze and clicking is there, and you can see her breathing harder than she should be. They get S76 for mites so I don't think it's that, the baytril I got was for 10 days so I'm trying that first, then going to maybe do another go with the S76. I am clinging to the hope I've caught it early.
Gosh, you have a lot to deal with. Sometimes I think life chucks everything at us at once.

I know you said no discharge or sneezing but it could also be a vitamin A deficiency or Iodine.
Worth a shot?
Yeah, I have 4 autoimmune conditions now. Apparently once you get a couple, you'll likely get more.

I have iodine in a bottle I give, Harriet use to need it as iodine blocks weren't enough, but could it be added to water with baytril? I'm willing to give anything a shot.

I wouldn't add it with the baytril. Is she handle-able?
If so then put three drops of iodine in 100ml of water and give her a drop 3 times a day. If she'd be really stressed by this then wait until the baytril course is over and giver it to her via her drinking water.

I'll give it a try in the morning, see how she goes.

I would be more inclined to give her the baytril by mouth and the iodine in her water. Baytril tastes like *poo* and many birds won't drink the water because of this, whereas they don't seem to mind the iodine. Edit: What a horrible person, that vet. Even my down-to-earth, no nonsense vet isn't as blunt and unhelpful as that. It sounds as though she thought budgies were beneath her!

Oh dear, there is nothing worse than complete negativity from a vet. I got that once when I described the symptoms to the **!!%$ receptionist when making an appointment! We know better than that don't we clt80? I hope this works out for you both. I know you will keep us informed with updates.
