Thanks @sillycat84. I don't think any of them would sit on a perch. It was easy with gerbils - l just put a treat on the scales when they were out to play and they climbed on. The vet used a metal pot and held his hand above it. I will try the carry case. Thank you for the hugs clt80. I really appreciate all the support and so does Randolph Carter.

It’s always a gamble getting pets as we don’t know if there’s any condition they have so there’s no way you’re to blame at all criswell. My Squawk had liver disease and he was my third sick budgie in a row so I did wonder what’s going on and what I was doing wrong but it’s luck of the draw. At least our birds are loved and cared for, better that than with owners that don’t care. Hence, I believe it is fate when we get the sick ones as they will be looked after as they need. I sincerely wish Randolph Carter all the best and a speedy recovery 💙

Thank you Jane I'm having an attack of the "what ifs ....?" Would Randolph Carter be sick now if we didn't have Dean Stockwell? I'm not expecting to see any improvement in a day, but he doesn't seem to have got any worse since yesterday. His droppings do seem to have less water with them, so maybe something is happening already but I can't get my hopes up. I'm changing the cage paper each night and keeping his overnight droppings to see if I can notice any change.

You’ll never know criswell but there’s plenty of people that have had birds with FM that have caused no adverse effects to their other birds. RC might have had this going on anyway whatever you did or did not do. I understand how you feel though as I blamed myself for Squawk’s liver disease which first showed symptoms when I had a new kitchen and bathroom fitted so I felt so guilty that the stress bought it on. Then it was the medication I gave him, then it was because I took him to a local vet at first rather than drive to the specialist vet in Andover. The list of blame and guilt goes on and on but the bottom line is that sometimes one is just dealt a bad hand in life. All you can do is continue to love him and the others. Hugs to you.

criswell, none of this can be attributed to blame on any one person; no one at all. Even getting the birds tested for these diseases isn't always 100% accurate as levels can be so low as to not be detectable. I am sorry that Randolph isn't in better shape, but a good feeling to have a vet that you trust on your side - he will get the best possible care and have the best outcome humanly possible. He really is in the best hands - yours and the vet's. To weigh my birds I usually just pop them on the scales and give a little treat, but sometimes I do have to use a bowl or similar with my hands hovering over the top to stop escapees. The weekly weigh-in is a small effort for peace of mind; your scales will almost definitely weigh differently to the vet's but you can keep track of trends up or down. I'm hoping Randolph is feeling better with a couple of doses of AB's in him. Hugs to both of you. xx

Thank you Jane. I still blame myself years later for things I have or haven't done with my past pets. It is quite possible that this has nothing at all to do with Dean Stockwell's virus, and your right, it may have been going on for some time. Maybe that's why he's been reluctant to fly. I guess we wouldn't have any thoughts like this if we didn't care. I certainly don't blame Dean Stockwell. Both my boys have benefited from Dean Stockwell's company. Randolph Carter used to get himself in to a right tizzy when Dexter was out with Miss Peacock. He'd squawk and flap about the cage until Dexter came back, rarely going out of the cage. And before that when he was in quarantine he would shout his head off even when I was there with him. That's the reason why his previous owner gave him away. But he's been so much happier with Dean Stockwell for company, and Dexter gets some peace to spend time with his lady, although funnily enough, he now spends much more time at home with his boys as he doesn't want to miss out on whatever they are doing

Thank you Hezz. I really do appreciate your kind words and good advice. We weighed him in the carry case and he's 62g. I think he'd be off the scales before the weight registered if I didn't put him in a container. I think I will see if I can find a pot or bowl that is suitable as I don't want him to worry that he's going to be taken away in the carrier again! He evaded capture in the cage for longer tonight so maybe he is feeling a bit better. He turfed Dexter off his swing at bedtime too which he hasn't done for a couple of nights. So maybe it's working. I really hope so.

I saw this video on YouTube criswell and thought it might give you some ideas about containers that you might already have around to weigh Randolph Carter. Thanks for keeping us updated on him!

Thanks for finding that tweetiepiesmom . It's a really good video and that looks like a great container. The birds were very cute too and it made me smile when they were on his glasses. I wish my birds were easier to handle. It was chaos this evening with 3 of them flapping about. Dexter actually climbed on to the back of my hand today because he was so desperate for a nibble of the bobble of millet that I was feeding to Randolph Carter. I hope I can build on that to make him less scared of hands in the cage. I hope I have some good news for you tomorrow. I've told Randolph Carter that everyone is rooting for him to get better.

There was definite improvement in his overnight droppings. They are solid and properly formed, with no rings of water. They are are darker too but still greenish. His urates are still yellower than the other boys too but it is definitely and improvement.
So far today he's been taking it easy - eating, napping and chatting to his buddies. I had a nap with them too at one point. He seems about the same in himself as yesterday. He was very excited to get a bobble of millet. At least he can associate my hands with nice things as David is the budgie catcher. He was really put out at being captured this morning. I think he would be really gloomy if he knew it was for another 39 days!
He is currently chattering away in his sleep, and bobbing up and down like they do so I think that's an improvement too.
I'll update again later. And thank you all for thinking about us xxxxx

Thank you jellybean. I passed on your hugs to him xx He's been sleeping a lot today, maybe more than yesterday, which worries me on the one hand that he's getting worse, but on the other hand it's a good thing to help him recover. His chattering more in his sleep so I think it is a sign that he is doing ok. When he's awake he's quite bright and responsive. So I hope he's feeling better.

Got all my fingers crossed for him! I've read that chattering birds are happy birds, so that is a good sign.

That vet sounds very thorough criswell . I'm sending love and healing vibs to RC for a good recovery. As i side note, my old JoJo had French moult and lived until he was 14, he grew up with his 4 siblings who were not affected and they didn't ever pick up anything at all from him, they all passed away at good ages a couple were 12 years old. I read all i could read about this virus and it's my understanding that the Polyoma virus isn't contagious but the Circovirus is but then i'm not a vet so really don't know, it's a bit of a grey area i think. Please do not blame yourself for a second over this, it's more than likely totally unrelated. A hug for you x
