It sounds like Randolph Carter is back on track; here's hoping he continues to improve so well. Such good news that his poops are back to looking normal.

He's doing really well, Jane. Thanks for asking. He's trying new strategies to avoid capture for his medicine. Rather than flying away or running about on the cage floor he now grips on to something really tightly and today he started screeching at David. I wonder what new plan he will come up with tomorrow! He's definitely getting stronger as he couldn't grip so tightly when we first started catching him. I haven't weighed him again since Monday but I was still able to feel his keel bone. It's so deceptive as he has so many feathers that he doesn't look thin at all. He's eating plenty - the seed pots are emptying really quickly. I had noticed that they weren't going down so fast a few days before I noticed he wasn't himself but I thought maybe I was just putting more seed in than usual. I'm now making sure I put the same amount in each time so I can use that as an indicator that someone might not be well. I was seeing RC at the food pots just as often as usual but he can't have been eating much when he was there. It really can be very hard to tell that they are unwell.

So happy to hear RC is doing better. I'm using RC's recovery to gauge Buddy's. When Buddy got his first antibiotic shot I thought it was going to be like people - you take the medicine, start feeling better within a day and after the 7 day course of pills you're all better. It seems these little guys take longer. Hang in there RC, you're going to be all better soon.

criswell, with a healthy bird you should still be able to feel their keel bone. It shouldn't feel sharp, but it should still be there. You should also be able to feel muscle mass on either side of the bone. An obese bird will have a fatty covering over the bone and you may have trouble feeling it at all.

I’m so glad he’s feeling better criswell and it sounds like he’s a little monster with taking his medication lol . I bet the screeching is a sight to see 😂

I've just read all through this thread and I'm so happy that Randolph Carter is on the mend. And criswell, you should write a book. You have a great way with words.

That's really useful to know. It felt quite prominent but having not felt another one it's hard to know exactly how it should feel but your description helps.

I've been noticing little changes each day - like him doing everything a little bit quicker, and moving his head a lot more when he looks at things.
I think he's almost back to normal now - and it will be 2 weeks on Tuesday since he started his antibiotics. I do hope Buddy is all better soon too.

The screeching is such a horrible sound. They squawk quite often which isn't the nicest but the screeching is awful. Tonight his tactic was to stick out his wings to prevent capture.

It's very kind of you to comment on my writing. I don't think I'd ever be able to write a book though

He certainly is showing some initiative in coming up with a variety of ways to avoid the dreaded meds. Top marks for inventiveness, Mr RC.

That is brilliant sweetpea and really made me laugh. There is no way I could give him medicine by myself. I have the easy part. He does try the beak clamp manouevre but I have 2 hands free so one for the medicine launching device and one for his beak. David needs 2 hands to hold on to him too so it is definitely a 4 handed job otherwise Randolph Carter would win every time. He is a master wriggler. He also knows he can spit it out so I keep the syringe near him for a couple of seconds so he keeps his mouth shut in case I try to give him more and David holds on to him for a little longer otherwise he will spit it out when he gets back in the cage. Hezz He likes to vary his repertoire and this morning he tried just about everything. It's good job he isn't a good flyer. He wriggled free from David and landed on the cage but he couldn't fly away quick enough.
