@bloomcountrylover I have a hawk who has started hanging out on the telephone wire behind my house in the early daylight hours. On Monday Buddy was somewhat unsettled and I couldn't coax him out of the cage for a fly around the guest bedroom which is the quarantine/hospital room. Today he was more settled and called back and forth with Tweetie Pie. He was in my bedroom which isn't bird friendly because I'm having work done outside and the guys were using gas powered tools. Fumes were coming into the guest room so Buddy got moved to my bedroom on the far side from the guest room. Tweetie Pie is in the family room which is also on that side of the house. Buddy has a "well bird" visit with the AV vet on Thurs morning. Pending that visit I may shorten the quarantine. I do want some bonding time with him and I'd like him to get out and fly around before introducing the two.

I totally understand harness training for large birds who can't get to fly around in an aviary or inside the house, but for a budgie?? Also the amount of harness to bird ratio is much smaller in the larger birds than with something as tiny as a budgie - the harness probably weighs more than the bird does!! Anyway, that's not something Buddy has to worry about, now.

I’d be worried the budgies would injure themselves if they took flight suddenly with a harness.

Since you are taking him to the Vet and you know the breeder I would maybe shorten the quarantine time as well. I just know these 2 are going to be great friends and because Buddy has been hand fed and tamed he may help to make Tweetie calmer with humans. Yes, poor Sam has been spooked by Eagles flying by the window so I can only imagine if she were outside with a harness on...

I haven't been on for a couple of days because Buddy has taken a turn for the worse.Yesterday morning I noticed he was breathing hard and his tail was bobbing. Thankfully I recognized the symptoms and called the vet. She wasn't in and recommended another vet nearby. I took him right in. She listened to his heart and lungs and said they sounded OK. She thought he might have a respiratory infection and gave him an antibiotic drop in her office and sent me home with the medicine to give him daily drops. She was OK but not a specialist. I already had the appointment for today with the avian vet so I took him to her. His tail was still bobbing but not really bad. She did a much more thorough exam and said she prefers to give injections because she knows the dose and is sure they're getting it whereas with drops sometimes they spit it out (bad little birdies). He got a shot of 20mg Doxycycline and she gave me a solution of Ofloxacin0 0.3% to put one drop in his nares every 72 hours. We have an appointment to go back next week for another shot if needed. She said to keep him warm and quiet. I have a heating pad that I've put under his cage and covered his cage leaving the front open. Like the rest of you who have had sick birds (any pet) I'm so worried about my baby!
I do like the avian vet very much. She said I should keep Buddy and Tweetie Pie separate for 2-3 months. She also gave me suggestions for hand taming Tweetie Pie and diet for them both. I will definitely use her for both of them. The downside is that she only works part time so in a real emergency she may not be there. Hope that never happens!

He does seem better this morning. He's eating, drinking his water and preening. His not vocal. I think he's still tail bobbing although its hard to tell. His tail has an upward curve which may make the natural motion look more exaggerated. I'm trying to look at his chest to see if he's breathing hard. When he gets better I'll put up more pictures of him. He is so very tame. When I put my hand in his cage he'd jump right up on it. After being caught a few times at the vet's and a couple times in a towel, when I put my hand in to change his food he dived down to the lower corner of his cage. Poor little guy!

I'm glad that he is starting to feel better. He sounds like a wonderful little bird. I hope he's all better soon.
It's really hard to tell if Randolph Carter is still breathing a bit fast because he now gets nervous when he sees me looking at him because he thinks he's going to get captured, and that makes him breathe faster. The other 2 start breathing faster then too. If you can see him when he doesn't know you are looking it might give you a better idea, but that's much easier said than done.
