I was recommended a heat lamp rather than heat pads for sick birds. I've not used a heat pad, so that info is only second-hand, but both vet and a experienced rescue carer who also has a bird with chronic arthritis recommended a lamp over the pads. The lamp must not be in the cage or touching the cage, positioned at one end so that the bird can move in and out of the heat as needed. This is all basic stuff, but some people don't know and their birds could end up getting burnt. Old humidicrib lamps are perfect, if you can get one.

This is the side view of one of my snake, Bob’s, lamps. I have the appropriate size dome on it.

I checked the other eggs with the candling technique and it looks like theres maybe only another one due to hatch. I will definitely be checking the chick more this time. My original thought was to leave the birds alone and everything would be fine. I could hear the chick the next day so presumed everything was OK. Its possible the chick wasn't getting food or that it was unable to get food. From what I can tell from other pictures I've found online you can see when they have eaten as the crop looks full.

Ok the other egg hatched today should I feed the chick if it doesn't have a full crop?

I have read information that says the hen may not feed the chick for 24 hours, so no. Let the hen do her job, if she will. It is too easy to get formula wrong. Too cold, too thick and the crop can't move it properly; too hot and you can cause a burn to the skin of the crop all the way through to the outside.

What if she doesn't feed it at all and it dies like the other chick

I fear the same thing could happen to this little chick. It is calling for food the male has tried to feed it but hasn't managed to. I'll see how the little chick is doing in the morning. I'll put the heat lamp on for them during the night.

Hezz has mentioned the hen may not feed the chick immediately. I hope the little one will be ok and Mum feeds it soon.

The chick still seems to be going about chirping so it's looking like a good sign. I've seen mum and dad go into the nest box to feed it I think. Fingers crossed this little one makes it

The hen will do the feeding at this stage of the chick's life. The constant chirping is to ensure that it does get fed.

Another update I've just witnessed the chick being fed and mum is eating alot. A shame about the first one but it's the first time for her having any chicks. I suppose that's why they lay more than one egg incase there is a bit of a delay in the learning process.....

It all seems to be going well hitman. Are you planning on keeping the chick?
