Hi there, I’m new here. And I’m just gonna get right down to business. I breed budgies and obviously had the normal issues that go along,That is until 6-7weeks ago. (He was about 2weeks old when I started) One of my breeders was killed by another bird. Which left me two orphans. Now In the past I’ve been lucky enough that if a tragedy occurred I found surrogates. But my main surrogate killed one baby and I found the other on the floor. I think it jumped out the nest box. They were only with surrogate mum 10 mins. So I hand feed the remaining baby. It went well for a first time “Hand Feeder” But now there is a MAJOR ISSUE it will not wean I’ve tried EVERYTHING (I think) and nothing is working. I have a mini zoo so it’s really draining my time and energy now,to the point I’m resenting it. (Which breaks my heart) I need Help . I really don’t want my EGGBERT POOPADINK to loose his life battle now, We have come so far.

Well done on the hand feeding, it is hard to even keep it at the right temperature!!
Where is the dad? It is usually his job to show the chicks how to fend for themselves, break seeds open, eat for themselves etc?
Have you scattered seed on the floor of the cage? I don't know if a chick would instinctively know what to do with the seed, or whether it'd need to see another budgie eat to be able to learn if that makes sense. Maybe have 2 cages side by side so the chick can see the other budgies eat if there is a concern about the chicks welfare? Or let the chick spend time in another Cage whilst you monitor for safety, preferably around the time they feed, then move chick back to their own cage once fed.
Do your budgies breed in a colony, or do you remove the ones who are breeding to their own cage with the eggs?

How old is this chick now? Sorry, but I found your timeline a little confusing. Agree with clt80, though, that the male parent is the one to show the chick how to feed for itself. Hang a sprig of millet in its cage as well as sprinkle seed on the floor. That really is all the basic stuff, though. Don't know what else to suggest. If the male parent isn't up to the job, sometimes another calm, mature male will take on the caretaker role.

Thank you for the replies. Poopa is about 8 weeks old now.his father was re integrated into the main Avery, after showing No interest what so ever in his babies. And honestly I didn’t even think to try him. I have tho put Poopa in the babie cage with my 5 youngest who are around 4 months old. He would not move did not try anything at all. So I bought him a new much smaller cage and I now keep that next to the cage with babies. He just sits there. He has been in his own cage for 2 an half weeks now. I have tried millet on the ground and hanging, as well as fruit and veggies, cuttle fish ,grass with seeds he won’t try anything.
And I have budgies who breed in a large Avery together. And I had 3 seperate, as the mothers use to kill each other’s babies.

The 4 month old babies may be the answer here as they could teach him how to feed. See if you can slowly introduce him in small steps so he isn't overwhelmed. I don't know when they feed, but mine always have a nibble in the morning and at night they like to have a proper feed before bed. Maybe you could put the baby in with the 4 months olds' when they are feeding, then put him back in his own cage. See if he watches and starts to copy. If he is next to them he should be use to their chirping and tweeting, but still it must be all so scary for him.

Agree with clt80 , another young bird will show him, maybe put one youngster in with him rather than put him in with 4.

How is the little budgie doing? He is doing ok. He is still very small . The last two days I have put him in with the other babies, he is now trying to crack seeds. But won’t go near them or if they approach Poopa he pecks at them. I am still feeding him 3 times a day. Tho compared to the other babies he or she is so thin. I will just keep trying this. If it doesn’t work, then I dunno 🤷♀️.. I cannot I repeat Can Not have a bird that wants a human companion. There is no where in my house or property to achieve this. So it needs to be a bird. I have 6 cats 2 dogs 2 Dingoes not to mention all the budgies lol I could sell it but it needs to be eating first. 🤦🏼♀️So I’m stuck lol

Im sm now full time trialling this method . Poopa is at least trying to crack seeds now. Where as in his own cage he will not even try. And if I put him in the bowl he just kicks it out till he all but empties the bowl. 🤣 should rename it Stubborn lips . Lol

I do hope the little budgie is eating on their own soon. We're rooting for you little fella! It’s definitely Not looking to good. It won’t try anything at all. I’m going to assume that when it jumped out of the nest to save itself, it did some brain damage. As nothing about this bird is normal.. and one day we are doing leaps and bounds the day after,We are back to square one . I’m getting nowhere Fast. . It looks ratty not thickly feathered it’s beak is the Wrong colour. It’s just not right. Now I feel I’ve Really done the wrong thing, maybe I should of let nature take its course. As this is so heart breaking 😪
