I've read in several places that a bottle is better than the usual type of water feeder so I bought one today. Will my budgie learn to use it without help? It's in exactly the same place as his other water container, between the same two bars and he knows where it is, he's inspected it but I haven't seen him drink from it yet.

Show him what it is - push up the valve so that a drop or two of water comes out, much easier if the bird is not a scaredy cat of human hands. If he has never seen one before, he won't know what to do to get a drink. Most learn to use them very quickly, but I did have one hen who absolutely refused to have anything to do with one. I had to keep another source of water in the cage just for her.

What else do you expect from a female?

Same here - my two girls refused to drink from the water bottles but the two boys preferred them so had to have both types in the cage. Don't remove the original water source until you are sure he is drinking from the new one. I think once they try it they are hooked.

I put the old one back in and he had a great big drink. I'll probably stick with that now and just check it several times a day. I'd hate to think he was thirsty.

uI have had no problem with the water bottle. I got one budgie to drink from the bottle in exactly the wqy that Hezz described. I rattled the little ball with mt finger and let some water drop out. I had a couple or three budgies at the time and one of them saw the water droplets..I have never had to train another one since, they learn from each other. One doesn't need to see them drink because you can hear it. I have had a few hens in my time and they all used the water bottle.

I think it's more hygienic, and for some reason the one I've been using since I got him doesn't fill the bowl part, so I have to keep checking there's water in it. The blue container is full but the drinking part is empty, I have to keep topping it up. It's this type of thing:
I thought he was drinking from the bottle, but he was so thirsty he couldn't have been.

I haven't met one like that before. I use the ones with a spout at the bottom. I think they are for rabbits and the like, but they do well for me and mine. I did used to have something similar but I stopped using it because there was always a seed in the bottom!!

With these fountain types, sometimes you have to tip the container over more than to the horizontal so that water flows into the drinking spout. Once the water is in the spout, it will fill as needed. It is just the surface tension on the water preventing it from flowing into the spout initially. I, too, think that the hamster bottles are more hygienic, but a little care in the placement of the water fountains or bowls is all that is required to keep the water clean. Unless, of course, you have a bird who is a dunker.

The only thing he dunks is himself in his bath
