In my opinion, we should be cautious. But panic buying just makes things difficult for everyone.
I read that antibacterial gel does nothing against a virus and you're better off with soap and warm water.

That's funny because I heard a doctor on Lbc (listen to it most mornings) also say that the antibacterial gel was no good against a virus. I'm getting different information all over the place.

How are we supposed to know how to keep ourselves safe, when there are so many conflicting stories.

That’s a shame suesbird but as you say better to be safe. I think the hand gels with the alcohol 60%, just stop it spreading if you then touched your face etc, rather than actually killing it, unless that’s the same thing. As handwashing is still the safe thing. I haven’t been able to get any, anyway for weeks. That’s very spooky re the book extract! A friend of a relative of mine, has a cousin who lives near Wuhan. There is a large testing centre there. They believe this has been leaked, which is what I think was said about AIDS way back? We’ll never really know, but was it a doctor or scientist who said ages ago, that this virus would spread. I know he then died, but I still think we’ve been too slow here to react, government wise. It’s shocking to think what the newspapers don’t say

They say Covid-19 has a fatty protective coating which is dissolved by the alcohol then it dies, but as you say the information we are getting is confusing.
A care worker in a care home less than a mile from me has proved positive. I'll be slapping it on!

I think we can speculate until the cows come home, but the real story may never emerge ... not to our dainty little ears anyway. I thought Australia had the only lot of morons panic-buying toilet paper. Everyone: coronavirus DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE S*#TS!!! Small businesses are already being affected, I don't feel governments can be blamed - they didn't know what they were working with initially, and reacting too harshly too quickly would have had people screaming overkill, big brother and human rights. It wouldn't matter what they did, they couldn't get it right in everyone's views. I saw a nasty video on the news ... I think in a train ... where a woman had coughed without covering her mouth; a fellow across from her asked her to cover her mouth when she coughed, so she deliberately fake-coughed in his direction several times. I honestly thought he was going to get up and smack her, and just as honestly, I would have wanted to do the same. We have become such a selfish society.

A lot of what you have all said is happening here in the States also. A couple of friends from my church emailed me to say they were not going to church or any gatherings in the near future. They will only go out to shop and will shop at low peak hours. Hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, toilet paper (loo rolls ), bottled water are all in short supply in the stores. Some stores have been jacking up the prices on those items. Fortunately the government has been going after them. Most of the colleges and universities have sent all the students home and will be conducting classes online. Many sports events are being held without any fans present. Many concerts and entertaining events have been cancelled. I have been more diligent about keeping my hands away from my face and washing them frequently. If you look at what currently is happening in China, the number of new cases has come down. I think we need to be careful but rational and it will run its course. It remains to be seen if the outbreak moves in the next few months to countries that now are in summer and will be in winter. Everyone, Watch out for yourselves, your family and friends. Stay safe and healthy.

There are no similarities with the Wuhan-400 virus from the book and Covid-19, thank goodness. We would be in very serious trouble if it was the one from the novel which is 100% fatal and people die within 24 hours due to toxic effects on the brain. Apparently in the first edition of the novel the virus was called Gorki-400 and it was a Russian biological weapon rather than a Chinese one.
We have the same situation with toilet paper and pasta here. Soap was low too. I couldn't get any hibiscrub in Boots which is frustrating as I use for washing my rabbit as she's an old lady now (10.5 years old) and she can't reach her rear as well as she used to. I've got enough for a couple more washes but just had to buy some on eBay for twice the normal price but still cheaper than the vets who charge 7 times the price of Boots. I'll be sticking with soap and water for washing my hands.
It seemed quiet when I was out earlier and people were keeping their distance from each other. Someone was buying 4 bottles of some kind of blue liquid soap. Lots of people were buying paracetamol. There were also lots of school age kids about even though it was school time. I guess some parents have decided not to send their kids to school.

Our church are taking extra precautions, we are not shaking hands for the "sign of the peace" just waving, they have alcohol hand gels at the entrance for us on the way in and out and also, no wine is being given. Plus all ministers distributing the bread will be sanitising their hands before and after.

Yes, our local asda is devoid of nappies, baby formula, hand wash, hand gel and toilet roll.

Hello out there - its been quiet on the forum from our long term members. Is everyone doing ok? Many things are being postponed or cancelled here. Walt Disney Land and other amusement parks are closed, concerts canceled, etc. Everyone is encouraged to stay home. I think when everyone has bought the supplies they think they need, the panic buying will stop and people will be calmer. In the meantime Tweetie Pie and Buddy are calling to each other and I'm enjoying the noise.

Absolutely crazy 🤬🤬🤬
The problem is, when people panic buy they NEVER think they have enough, hence the reason unselfish people can't get any.

My daughter Holly has just tried to do her normal weekly shop and can't get anything. Pasta gone, tin goods gone, frozen stuff gone. She's tried 3 different places. She's vegan so is really struggling, she also suffers from anxiety and is getting really upset. My husband Alex who is a lorry driver has come home to tell me that the delivery that they were meant to get into their cash and carry depot for hand sanitiser has been seconded by the government. So that is possibly part of the the reason there is non in the shops. I am also worried about my Dad, he's 72, after just loosing Mum he doesn't need this upset as well. Well none of us do really. My mum was cremated today, I have had other things on my mind. It has not really been high on my list to do grocery shopping, now we need it we can't get any. Sorry about your holiday suesbird
