Hi all im new to this forum. Im very worried about my budgie Charlie. 14 yrs old. He is being treated for bird flu. He is eating drinking ok but sounds terrible. He has also started climbing the cage and staying on the sides of the cage and not on his perches. He has been on antibiotics for 7 wks now and he is no better. Could it be something else? The vet says not.

Hi Debbie, I’ve not come across this before with mine so cannot offer any experience with it. Others on here have much more bird experience than me and are bound to post any advice they can offer. However, I thought flu is a virus so wonder why has the vet put him on antibiotics as that will only work with bacterial infections, hence why it may not be helping Charlie 7 weeks is a long time to be on a medication with no improvement.
I suggest you go back to the vet and question this and see if there’s a different medication he can try or something to make him feel more comfortable. Whereabouts are you located and is your vet an actual avian vet?

Hi jane nearest bird vet is an hours drive away and i dont think he would make the journey he hates going in the car. The vet spoke to another vet who she said dealt with exotic birds. I dont know what to do for the best.

Hi jane nearest bird vet is an hours drive away and i dont think he would make the journey he hates going in the car. The vet spoke to another vet who she said dealt with exotic birds. I dont know what to do for the best. Hi Debbie, it’s your decision as you know Charlie best and what he can cope with. I had a budgie called Squawk and he was ill with liver disease. I had him treated locally but a vet claiming to be an avian specialist but he wasn’t improving. The vet he saw just kept prescribing antibiotics and exasperated I paid £262 for tests which showed nothing (as she had not even considered liver disease. In the end I made an 80 mile round trip to take him to John Chitty in Andover who done a crop swap and promptly diagnosed him with liver disease at a fraction of the cost of the other vet. John is highly regarded as an avian vet and he’s the vet that vets contact round here for advice. However, Squawk was still young and could tolerate the journeys. Why not call the specialist vets and see what they suggest especially with Charlie being an older bird. Let us know how you get on and I’m rooting for Charlie 🤞🏻

Hi Jane my husband phoned the specialist vet and he wouldnt diagnose over the phone. He really isnt well so will have to take him. Yes I thought that he will need to see him. Even though Charlie’s unwell you’re giving him that chance to see the avian vet. Just sit with him and resssure him during the journey. Squawk used to travel in his little box with his little plastic penguin and I used to chat to him en route. Best of luck.

If you have a small travel cage, try covering the 3 sides with a towel/cover, that might help to keep Charlie calm.
Good luck, please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

On the side of the cage is your budgie using their beak to hang on? I'm just thinking if they are, and the awful noises are wheezes or clicking it could be a respiratory infection. The cage thing is your budgie trying to elongate their neck to breathe better. Albeit some budgies like to sleep like that sometimes when they are healthy, it is usually when they are trying tk help themselves breathe easier that they do this I've found.

Sorry, I did post on here before, but mustn't have hit the reply button properly. I would be getting another opinion, but how much should a 14yo budgie be put though? How much of this is down to his grand old age?
