Hi there. My female budgie is exhibiting all the signs of an advanced goiter. It's entirely my fault as the mineral block I've given my birds for some time now has no iodine in it. I assumed it contained iodine when I purchased it to replace an old iodine block. Anyway, there is not a single iodine block in my town until Tuesday and there is no Lugal's in my town. The only form of iodine I can get is a regular old 2.5% iodine tincture. It doesn't even come with a dropper but just a dabber. If I touch the dabber to a surface, I get about a small drop. Would it be advisable, given my access to limited resourses and the urgency of my bird's condition, to touch the dabber to the bottom of the water bowl which she shares with a male budgie, and then fill the dish? It holds about 6 tablespoons of which they drink very little in a day. Thanks for your advice. I understand you aren't veterinarians. Unfortunately, an avian vet is another resource lacking in my community! Brandy

I can’t answer your question but I’m sure that someone on here will post later but the birdcare company are good to contact with any health related questions and will be open tomorrow. They can advise of any products and dosage to give. Furthermore, my budgies do have an iodine block but I feed them Hagen bird seed that contains iodine so it reassures me that one way or another they are getting their iodine. birdcareco-shop.com/www.petscorner.co.uk/hagen-budgie-seed-1-36kg

Thanks for the suggestion of the Hagen bird seed. That is a product available in my community.

You have the correct iodine, 2.5%. That's fine. Can you not buy a glass dropper separately? Most pharmacies/chemists sell them singly. The correct dosage for iodine deficiency in budgies, using the 2.5% tincture is three (3) drops into 100mls of water. If you can't get a dropper, perhaps try using something like a teaspoon handle to get your drops.
