Hi any advice appreciated please. One of my Aviary budgies laid 3 eggs on the floor and started to sit on them, i bought a nest box and put the eggs in there and mum followed and i now have 3 lovely tiny babies. I have no idea who the dad is out of my 4 males. My question is do i just leave them alone or should i put mum and babies in a seperate cage ? I'm worried about them being high up in a nest box once they start moving around. Also if the other budgies suddenly take a dislike to them. Thanks in advance.

Congratulations. Breeders should be in a place of their own, so yes, please separate them from the rest of the aviary asap. The other budgies, especially any hens or even the mother if she wants another clutch can hurt the chicks. Is there one male who seems more attentive? One that the hen seems more happy to have around? If so, put him into the breeding cage with mum and chicks. He can help feed her and help the chicks learn to forage when they get a bit older.

Thankyou 😊 i will seperate her today. There is a couple of the males who sit on the perch of the box so I'm really not sure 😏 I'm going to spend some time quietly sitting in there today and see if i can work it out ! If i can't is it safe to just move mum and babies on there own ?

It is, but dad should be helping her, and generally it is his job to teach the chicks how to forage and crack seed. You may be able to work out who of the males the hen prefers to have around if you sit and watch for a while. Otherwise you could try adding one or other of the two attentive boys. If Mum objects though, remove him ... for everyone's sake.

Usually the hen will kick the eggs out when she realises that they aren't viable, but if it has been well over time for them to hatch, you could remove them when she isn't in the box.

Thankyou i will give them a few more days, mum and dad are happy and mum is not sitting in the nest all the time any more and doesn't seem phased when i check the babies. I can't wait to see what colour they will be 😊

So beautiful, there is something so special about watching and helping a pair of buds raising their beautiful babies
