So, I’ve had Niko for about 1 month now. He’s still scared to let me touch him but is starting to let me a little. He doesn’t step on to my finger yet. My question is, can I let him out of his cage if he’s afraid of me? Will he go back to his cage on his own? I’m a little worried that I won’t be able to get him back in his cage if he’s scared of me touching him. Or should I wait until he’s more comfortable with me?

There has to be a first time, and the first time for me was when BertieB escaped when I was cleaning out his cage. I suppose it's best if you can teach them to step up and take them in and out of the cage, but Bertie prefers stepping onto a toy rather than my finger. He likes my face, my feet and my shoulders, but he's never been too keen on my hands. The first time I got him back in by playing a video of budgie sounds on my phone and putting it by his cage. Now he goes in and out when he wants. The only time his cage is closed is if I'm out and at bedtime. That's how it worked out for me but there are more experienced folk on here with better advice. My methods were 'stumbled across'

I answered this on your other thread ...
Wait until he is more comfortable with you - work with him in his cage. And no, he won't go back into his cage on his own. Not until he is more comfortable with his surroundings and gets to know that that is where the food is to be found.
If this all takes too long, use the smallest room in the house to let him out, and leave yourself lots of time to get him back in the cage once you have him out. In a small room you have a better chance of getting him back into his cage before he flies off again. If he won't step onto your finger, use a spare perch and teach him to step up onto this. Letting him out before he knows basic stepping up could be a disaster for you both.
