Hello my name is James i've had my single budgie for three months, Banjo is his name, i've been researching and going through bucket loads of forums to help me with taming my budgie. You see, i got mt budgie at an older age so its been only accepting seeds and some millet mix however it does not try to eat any millet spray or any other product which makes hand taming impossible, it seems to only want seeds. i heard this is unhealthy for the budgie but i've tried my luck so many times tempting it with a leaf of lettuce, even chopped up, he treats it like it isn't there. in my attempts i've stopped trying to hand tame it and I'm now just regularly change food, water and clean the cage as a whole.
Does anyone have any ideas to get my budgie to start eating lettuce, fruit or any other alternative food. Honestly i'd hate just eating seeds my whole life.
P.s. just a side note it has mirror that it loves more than anything in its cage including my hand, i've heard its a good idea to get rid of mirrors while taming, is that true?

Hello and welcome yamsniffle. Firstly, lettuce is not a good thing to give to a budgie unless very very occasionally. Try some celery, or fresh herbs. Basil is a good one, especially if wet, Banjo may rub himself against it to bathe and then will be more inclined to try it as a food. It will take time for him to get to like new foods, offer them often, even if he doesn't eat them at first. There is a list on here suggesting budgie safe foods to offer. Offer veg rather than fruit (sugar content), but the occasional slice of apple is quite a favourite. Let us know how you get on.
