Hello! I am new here but I've got my 2 budgies, Rici and Toki, for 4-5 months already. One of them, Rici, started scratching frequently and I noticed he has scaly feet. His beak also started to crust a little and he's sneezing. In fact, both of them are sneezing and preening frequently as of lately. Do you think these are signs of mites? Also, for any medication, I am from Romania and I have no avian vet here. The most I could do is go to an animal pharmacy and ask there if they have the medicine. But it will be hard, especially with the COVID-19 restrictions. Are there any short-term remedies? To help him a little until I can get the medicine? P.S. I already replaced their cage and cleaned the new on thoroughly.

It does look like he might have scaly mites. What you need is 0.1% Ivermectin which you can purchase on line. Make sure you get the correct concentration as there are plenty of different ones around, for all different sizes of animals. In the meantime you can smear vaseline (petroleum jelly) over their feet and legs to help begin to kill off the mites. You can use it on their beaks as well but be very careful not to get it in their nostrils. The vaseline doesn't work terribly well, and can take a long time to see any real results, but it is better than nothing. All it does is smother the mites that have buried themselves under the skin.

I've just had this with one of my birds, Vaseline certainly does help (while I was waiting for the Ivermectin) and you can apply it easily with a cotton bud, which ensures you don't get the vaseline round the nares (nostrils). If you can get it the Ivermectin 0.1% should be put on the back of the neck, not on the feathers, one drop per week for three consecutive weeks.

Thanks a lot! I will try and look for some Ivermectin and hopefully they ship here. Should I separate my birds during the treatment? Because they usually scratch each other. Also I'm not sure how I will apply it to them since they are still scared of my had, especially her(Toki). Thank you very much for the advice though! I'll try to get it as soon as possible.

You MUST make sure that it is Ivermectin 0.1% spot on drops as any higher strength would kill the bird. The place to put it is on their back of the neck in between their shoulder blades (as its the only area they cannot reach to preen) Where abouts are you in the world? As it may be known as something different

I'm from Romania! I looked up Ivermectin 0.1% and I only found it on UK sites. Here the shipping would be the exact same amount as the medicine itself. I also found it on ebay, but the seller is away... ( the one on e-bay would have been shipped from Bulgaria which I thought would be faster than UK). I will go on Monday to an animal pharmacy to ask if they have anything like that, or even that medicine itself.

You will also have to treat the other birds too, even though they don't show signs (yet). You will also need to disinfect toys, cage etc.

Do not use mite sprays of any sort. These are often stocked in pet stores, and are less than useless; they are downright dangerous to your birds. All birds need to be treated at the same time. An animal pharmacy should give you clear concise instructions on how to use it, and yes they should stock it.
Anything I can buy on line I pay as much to get it to me as for the product itself, so you're not alone regarding that issue.

I have looked it up and ivermectin 0.1 is mostly only on uk stores which don't ship outside the borders. I have found ivermectin here, but it's either 0.8 or 1% which I know is way too strong for them. Would it be possible to dilute it with water? Also, in the meantime, I don't have vaseline ( only the one used for car parts) on me. Would coconut oil help? Or would that harm them ?

Sorry, (I've just posted this on another thread) but you cannot dilute down Ivermectin of a higher concentration as the solution is not water-based. It is glycerine based, which won't mix with water. Normal vaseline will be fine; coconut oil won't hurt them but it won't have the same smothering capacity as the vaseline, if it is anything like mine.
Why not phone up your pet pharmacy and find out what you can from them? They might be able to help you get what you need.

The Vaseline used in the U.K. is actually 'petroleum jelly'. Is that what you have beutsuke?

No, I have the sort that is used in making car components be smooth... uhhh I think that's called grease ?? but, like, for cars? Anyways, it's not pure petroleum jelly. I will see if I can find anything like that here. I'm sure there should be since it's used in cosmetics . And about ivermectin, we don't have it here but the vet gave me something similar. And I have to dilute that one and then tap it on their feet, beak and under their wings. Thanks a lot, everyone!!

I'm glad you have something to treat him with. Could you post a photo of the bottle or whatever that the vet gave you?
