We just had a call in radio show with a vet. So, I asked the question if it were possible for my budgies to get the corona virus from me. The answer was "No, definitely not". There is only one known case of a bird with the corona virus and it was not in the parrot family and was a wild bird. I'm resting easier!

FYI - the vet was Dr. Jeff Werber, not an avian vet. He said spread of the corona virus from pets was of most concern with cats that are outside/inside cats because you can't be sure where they've been. Dogs and cats can step where people may have spit on the ground, pick up the virus that way and spread it around in your house. He said it was a low probability but you might want to use a sanitizing wipe and wipe your pet's paws before coming back into the house. The questions were all submitted by email ahead of time so he could look up the answers if needed. drjeff.com/

Cross-species transmission is not common with viruses. A pet carrying it in on their paws is a different issue, but if humans could refrain from spitting altogether, wouldn't that be wonderful? I think it's disgusting; turns my stomach.
