Hello yall, i'd like to share my new budgie setup.
So previously, my budgies were all in one cage. I was naive, and kept putting off buying a new cage, which i regret deeply. Since we've moved houses, my budgies had lived on the ground floor, where there was lots of noise from the door, kitchen, laundry machines, etc. I noticed that one of my budgies (Neeko), was starting to become more shy. She only has one foot, and the other two were bullying her. She had also started over preening/plucking her feathers. As soon as I noticed, I called a avian specialist, and they recommended I get a better living situation for my birds.
Right now I work a job that closed because of the quarantine, so i'm trying to get the best I can for my money. I used to work at a bird shop, where I was able to pick up a new cage for a good deal. Once I get my next paycheck, i will be able to get some better toys, and some healthier perches for my birds feet. Here's what I have so far.
So firstly, I wanted my birds to feel safe. I decided the best place for them to relocate would be my room, away from all noise. I read that budgies feel safer when they have their cage to a wall, so I gutted my closet to make room for them.
I was able to go to my old job and get this 100 dollar cage for 80, along with some chew toys for Neeko, and some millet.
Heres how the setup turned out.
The vet recommended I keep Neeko alone, so she ended up staying in the old cage. Someone recommend I get something bigger, so I will next paycheck. Right now she just started using her stump foot, so shes getting used to being more mobile. She seems happy in this cage for now. I also have some seed mash because she is really thin compared to the other birds. My old boss (bird shop owner) who had looked at her recommended i feed her some so she can get a little more nutrition. On the top right is a small speaker that plays some budgie noises for her so she doesn't get lonely, and it seems to be working well.
There is some millet next to some chew toys at the bottom of the cage. Im hoping she can find them and chew a bit on them to help reduce plucking. Since shes been alone with the speaker, I haven't seen any plucking behavior.
Here is Skye and Athena. They have lots of room. I didn't have enough to buy any new perches for their feet or toys, but they'll get some new ones soon.
Feel free to drop any advice/knowledge that can improve their setup, I really wanna make sure my babies are happy!
