Sorry I also meant to say that his primary tail feathers are black with a black midrib.
Also at 9 months old he weighs 47g. Do you think he's a 'show' budgie?
Thanks.

It's hard to tell his true colour from the pictures willowsmum, is he blue or grey. He's a wee cracker 😘

Thanks jellybean. That's the crux of the argument in this house, OH says blue while I say grey. I still think grey with blue-ish cheek flashes. So the second pic above is the least like him if you know what I mean, my avatar and other pics are more representative.

Then he is probably a mauve. He doesn't have any other colouring mutations happening, so he'd be called a normal mauve. Bluey, in my avatar was a normal mauve - sometimes he looked almost lilac, others almost grey.

Thanks Hezz , he does look like your Bluey and yes, he looks different in different light too. A normal mauve would settle our blue/grey argument amicably as neither of us is exactly right! Am I right in thinking that the colour of the primary tail midrib is indicative of one or the other colour? I can't remember where I read it now. Although don't mauve and grey both stem from a basic blue in which case hubby would be technically right in which case we won't mention that Normal mauve it is.

Actually, you are correct, my apologies. It's not the rib of the tail feather so much as the whole tail feather, and if Willow's is black rather than deep blue, then he would be classed as a grey. His lighter cheek patches would also be indicative of being grey as well. Apparently, as a grey, he could show signs of blue tinges if he carries a violet factor. Budgie mutations are not a simple thing! This explains it better, with pictures. www.cutelittlebirdiesaviary.com/mauve-and-grey.html

Hezz so I could be right after all - yay! The link looks great, thanks. I'm going to re-read it and check him in good light today but he's looking like a grey as you say. Thanks!
