Three days ago Perry, my 3-4 month old budgie, started to poop seed. It is only ever 1 seed per poop and always the round ones (my seed mix has various different shaped seeds), also this only happens in the morning every 3rd-4th poop. I thought that maybe this might be due to him destroying a pink calcium block (maybe altering his stomach pH?) and/or introducing carrot into his diet (which I stopped two days ago, as soon as the problem started), but the pooping issue continues, every morning without fail. Apart from this he seems happy and healthy, very active and doesn't show any other obvious signs of illness. It seems strange that this only ever happens in the morning and 1 seed per poop. I assumed for a while that maybe this is because in the evenings when he gets put back in his cage he buries his head in his seed hopper to try to get my attention and let him out again, maybe swallowing some seed whole? Has anybody else ever experienced this? At the moment it is very difficult to get a vets appointment in Spain (due to the "State of Alarm" only emergency procedures are allowed), which makes me worry even more as I can't just happily pop to the vets. I would love to get some of your opinions on the matter!

I'm sorry; I don't have anything to offer you. Could you try phoning some vets to try to get some advice over the phone?
Is Perry new to your environment? Perhaps it is simply stress of a new home, new surrounds that is upsetting his little gut.

No, I've had Perry for almost two months now, but yes, I will try phoning the vets and see if they can give me any answers. Thank you and I hope you are well!

I don’t know if this is any help but my budgie sometimes poos out seed too. Every few weeks or so or sometimes longer, a few of his poos will have seed in. I don’t know why & he seems fine when it happens (he’s 7 now). Obviously if this is new it’s something to keep an eye on & I'm always extra aware when it happens to my bud that he’s ok.

Hello hugsowls, has your budgie got any oyster shell grit in his cage and cuttle bone? You say he has an iodine block.

Hello hugsowls , has your budgie got any oyster shell grit in his cage and cuttle bone? You say he has an iodine block. Hi Shirls, he has a pink calcium block (calcium carbonate (calcium 20,6%, sodium 0,2%, phosphorus 0,0%)) and every now and then I give him a vitamin bar. He hasn't got a cuttlefish (because has the pink block) or grit (as I have read that budgies don't really need it, although if mine isn't de-hulling correctly maybe he does? Would you recommend soluble grit?). Thanks for the help! Hope you're well

Yes hugsowls, budgies do need soluble grit, (commonly called oyster shell), they will eat it as and when they need it, pretty much like when they eat cuttle and iodine block. They seem to know when they need it, so may have long periods when they don't even touch it. I am well thank you and hope you and yours are too.

Only advice I can give is like Hezz said to phone the vet and ask for a telephone consultation.
Also, you could monitor his weight weekly if you have scales.
