Does anyone know if it would be ok to put my orchid in the porch or would it be too hot. It has sun on it up till 1pm windows on 3 sides? Not too sure quite how to answer that Helen! Personally I would give it a go, but keep an eye on it. Make sure it doesn't dry out too much, but as you probably know they don't need a lot of water usually, but if it's very hot in your porch it may need a little more than usual. If the leaves go soft, apparently that is lack of water, so just keep an eye on it. Does it get too cold of a night time though - it might not like that!!!

It can get colder in there yes Shirls, there is no heating. I think I’ll leave it where it is for now.

With some of my plants I do move them, rightly or wrongly, and bring them inside the house as opposed to the conservatory which gets cold at night time. So you could put your orchid out during the day only. Must say though, sometimes I do forget!!!

Here's my sad orchid. At least I haven't killer it! A friend gave it to me about 1 1/2 years ago right after my back surgery. It hasn't bloomed again and I have lost a leaf or two but new leaves keep coming out.

Perhaps it needs a change of position to see if it spurs it into action?

My orchid is in the full glare of the sun, it seems to love it and it has flowered for the 3rd year in a row. Sadly my other orchid died when I repotted it. I know better now.

If it is actively growing tweetiepiesmom then give it a feed with orchid food. You can also put it in a plant sprayer and spray the leaves and air roots with the water and food as it absorbs it very well that way too Then hopefully it might sprout a flower spike

Thank you samwiseg and Shirls! How often should I give it food and what is the best way to feed it? I just got some orchid food from my local garden center. In today's environment, I called up, they pulled it off the shelf and rang it up and then put it in the trunk of my car when I pulled up while wearing masks and gloves to avoid all contact!

In today's environment, I called up, they pulled it off the shelf and rang it up and then put it in the trunk of my car when I pulled up while wearing masks and gloves to avoid all contact! I take it, that it is a feed that you put in water? Didnt know if they were different in the states?! Firstly, orchids dont need watering that often. They usually say if you think your orchid needs watering then give it another week I usually do mine every 3 weeks and perhaps every 2 when its warm. But misting is really important! They have air roots (please dont bury or cut these off) as these are vitally important to the plants health. Once you have made up your liquid feed (another tip I was given, better to under feed than over feed) cant remember the reason but it was a worthy one! And then feed your orchid whilst its growing. Also spray it regularly air roots as well as leaves (as I said with the feed in the water) as it absorbs food better this way than rather through the soil/bark. When having an orchid for the first time, it needs to be taken out of its mini pot and put in a clear plastoc pot of orchid compost. Plants then dont need to be repotted for about 2-3years! I think thats it! Any other questions....ask an orchid expert!!!

Thanks samwiseg! My orchid is in a clear plastic pot and that is in a decorative pot. Yes, the orchid food I got is a powder that you dissolve in water to use. Attaching a couple of pictures. I fed it this morning by dunking the plastic pot in the liquid food so if it looks wet, that's why. I noticed one of the leaves looks like its dying. Marianne Marlow I love your plants. Buddy and Tweetie Pie eat their grass like its candy! I have been buying them wheat grass from the grocery store. It is grown hydroponically so the roots are attached. That makes it easy to cut off a clump and attach to the cage with a plastic clip. I'd love to grow more grasses for them myself. Do you pluck out a clump with the roots attached and clip that to the cage? If you cut off the blades of grass what do you use to hold them together to clip on the cage? Thanks.
