Ever since the little ones came to us, it's been chaos at night times. I have managed to get them into a routine and I can get them in quite easily for bed time, that is not the problem. The issue is the CONSTANT bickering and squiggling that goes on when they get in the cage at night. It takes about 20 minutes for them to stop the fracas! It's mostly Daisy and Iris (the hens). I am looking for advice for a bigger cage, but one that does not look too dissimilar to the one that they currently have. I have been searching online but have drawn a blank. Their current cage is an Imac cage, 59x59cm (23x23 inches) and they are ONLY locked in at night time. HELP!!!

Marianne, when you say you are looking for a bigger cage, would you not consider the Hamberley? I don't know what price ranges you have been looking at with your other choice of cages, but the Hamberley is a great cage, a bit more expensive now, than when I bought mine, but it would house around 4/5 budgies, maybe more. I know your birds, like mine, are free flying all day, and with a cage this size it might allow you to have less cages, all the birdies who do get along could go in the Hamberley, and the disagreeable Hens could be housed in another cage Just a suggestion, it is so easy to keep clean too. When it comes to cages it would be my first choice every time

Personally Marianne, I don't think a bigger cage would solve the problem, a separate cage possibly would though. As you know I only have one hen and we have this squiggling every blooming night when they are all shut in for bed. It has been several months now since the newbies arrived and I think it is just a 'henny' thing with mine, she just doesn't want anyone else on a swing and in turn, turfs each one off until she is too tired and goes to sleep on whichever one she ends up on. She used to have her own swing and went on it every night, since the two newbies she alternates! It may just be the 'henny' thing with yours too??

jellybean, although the Hamberley looks great, I'm not sure I have room for it, if I got the little ones a Hamberley then I feel I'd have to get the others one too! It is definitely Daisy that causes all the issues Shirls, she is just plain mean! But the thing is, Lucy is in a cage with 4 boys and although they have a few squabbles, it calms down really quickly. I don't want to put Daisy in on her own though as I don't want her to be sad

Could you not put Lucy and Daisy in a separate cage Marianne, just night times?

Could you not put Lucy and Daisy in a separate cage Marianne, just night times? Lucy is not much trouble. Daisy and Lucy do not get along very well.

A bigger cage might not help. My boys are in a piano 6 and I still have fuss and squiggling at night. Dean Stockwell is the problem. I get them all settled on swings and then he'll come down of his and start squiggling at whoever is closest too him. They tend not to take any notice of what he is doing and once the light is out he usually goes back on to his swing and settles down but he's a right nuisance every night. It's especially and problem when Dexter is his closest neighbour or if the other two take one of his favourite swings. I think I need to move the swings even further apart which is something that is easier to do in a bigger cage. I'm going to make a bigger swing too as Dean Stockwell and Randolph Carter always nap next to each other in the daytime so maybe they'd like to share a swing at night. Probably not but it's worth a try

I hope your bigger swing solves your night time issues!
I'm wondering if these guys are just always going to be a nighttime nightmare!

I do feel sorry for Dexter at bedtime as Randolph Carter likes to steal Dexter's swing off him. It doesn't matter what swing Dexter has, Randolph Carter wants it. It doesn't matter if Randolph Carter has first choice of swing. But Dean Stockwell is the real trouble at bedtime.
If got all the bits for making a swing so will give it a try next week. They will probably all just be terrified of it as they about anything coming in to their cage.
