I noticed Bertie standing on one leg, which he often does, but there was some blood on his foot. I managed to have a look and a claw was hanging off. He seems quite happy and it has stopped bleeding. I've no idea how he did it, but he does catch his claws in the carpet a lot. I pulled off the bit that was hanging off and bathed it in some boiled water. Will he be okay?

Oh, poor Bertie. I'm glad it's not bothering him and it's good that it's stopped bleeding. I can't offer any advice but I'm sure others will have experience of things like this. It must have given you quite a scare when you saw it.

It did! I wasn't sure if claws fell out routinely, like baby teeth or something. I'm sure it was fine an hour or so ago when I cleaned out his cage so he's only just done it. He doesn't seem bothered although he's mostly holding that leg up, although he's still using it when he moves around his cage. My poor baby

What a shame. Poor little fella.
I'd maybe put some savlon or sudocrem on it to maybe soothe it.
See what others think.
I hope he's okay, and not holding his foot up for long.

He seems okay really. I've shut the cage door, he's just had a mad moment dashing round the cage and headbutting the swing, and he's chattering away. I'll cover the cage in a minute so he goes to sleep and rests his foot, and see how he is in the morning.
Thanks for your replies.

Oh no! Poor Bertie. It must have been a nasty shock for you both. It sounds like he's being such a brave boy. I hope he has a good night and is feeling better in the morning.

Claws are like our fingernails - they don't drop the way feathers do. It is possible that he will not grow a new one though, if the nail bed has been damaged. You might find that he isn't as dexterous with that foot if the claw isn't replaced. His toe may hurt for a few days. I'd keep a very good eye on it over the next few days for signs of infection, even be proactive and bathe it in some warm salty water a couple of times a day to help keep it clean. As jellybean has said, a little savlon may help soothe it to some degree. Cayenne pepper is good for pain relief, and for helping blood to clot, if it does start to bleed again (unlikely).

Thanks Hezz. He seems fine this morning, his usual mischievous self and he is moving around as normal. He is not tucking the leg up so much so I've been able to have a better look. There is what looks like a tiny claw there, so is it possible that the 'outer shell' came off?
I will keep a very close eye on it and try to bathe it, but it is obviously still a little sore so I might try to just dribble some salt water over it, or maybe use it in a spray if you think that could work. I would offer him a bath with salt in, but he usually drinks some of his bath water so I don't think that would be a great idea.

I've had several birds that have lost toe nails. As Hezz said it may not regrow. As long as it doesn't get infected or bleed again he should be fine.

Thanks Marianne. I am just so sad this has happened. I was going to be the best budgie owner ever. I have ordered a play gym to try and keep him off the floor. Although I didn't see it happen I think he must have caught it in the carpet.
I have boiled some water and I'm going to offer him a bath with some basil and coriander leaves in. I believe these are natural disinfectants. Might not do him any good but won't do him any harm.

Gerry lost a claw about a year or so ago and never knew how it happened but he is fine, stands on one foot using that foot etc with no problem so hopefully Bertie will get over it.

It's not your fault, these things happen. My Basil caught his in a gap near the cage door opening. Billy has come to me with a slightly deformed toe due to losing a nail. I take it you mean cool, boiled water

Yes, cool boiled water He's had a look but hasn't gone in. Never mind. I know it wasn't my fault, but I have been watching him for a while catching his claws in the carpet. I even wondered if I should trim them but decided against it, I don't feel experienced enough. He could have got it caught in his cage or any of the perches I have around the room. Anyway, I hope this gym will keep him occupied and off the floor. I was going to try to make him one but with everywhere being closed it won't be easy to hold of the materials and my son can't come round to help. Thanks all for your reassurance. It's so good to have somewhere to come and chat, especially when something sadly goes wrong.

Things happen, regardless of how hard we try to not have things happen. A lesson in reality: When my first budgie was in the beginning stages of his downhill trend, he spent time at the vets sharing a room with another budgie who had broken his leg in his cage. My question was how did it happen. Vet response was the owners didn't know. Me, in my holier-than-thou attitude, thought ... how could your budgie break its leg in its cage and you not know how??? Well, bring me down a notch, a couple of years later it happened to me! Serves me right to make assumptions. The cage the bud was in was the same cage that they had all been sharing for several years, nothing different, no difference in toys, perches, pots etc. Nothing. It was just one of those things. I removed al sorts of things that I thought might have been the culprit, but really what I now think happened was that he had his leg/foot through one of the little door gaps and got a fright, took off in a hurry and the leg broke. An accident, pure and simple. That humbled me so much and regretted my initial judgement of that other poor little fella with his little plaster on. The good news is that both buds legs healed fine and straight.

Thank you Hezz. Just accidentally typed Hexx. Glad I noticed Sometimes it's easy to forget what fragile little creatures they are. I have taken a deep breath, and stopped blaming myself and I'm putting all my energy into making sure he gets better and, as far as I can, doesn't injure himself again.
