Bertie has had a bath, just in boiled water. His toe is not looking swollen or red and the end looks clean. There is definitely a tiny claw there, or what looks like the inside of a claw which is reddish and claw-shaped. I have tried without success to find the anatomy of a claw to see if the outer keratin layer surrounds a maybe softer interior. He still holds that leg up at times, but I think I'm just noticing it more. Sometimes he stands on the injured foot and holds the other leg up. He is active and happy.
Here's a picture. I know the foot looks swollen but honestly, it's just the angle of the photograph. I tried to get as close to the injured foot as I could.

Lucky Bertie, getting new toys. I hope he does like them and doesn't think they are out to get him!
I'd wipe them over before giving them to him, though. There is a recent thread where budgies became sick soon after getting a new gym. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

I had a telephone consultation with the vet today and sent her a picture of Bertie's claw. I was concerned that his toe felt hot. I have got antibiotic drops for him. First dose didn't go too badly but he's not happy with me at the moment. 13 more doses to go  Poor little chap.
Are there any side effects from Baytril Oral that I should look out for?

Not that I know of, except that it tastes horrible, they'll fight to the death not to take it and therefore end up making a sticky mess of their facial feathers. Have a wet cloth handy to wipe off the mess after. Some do become a little down ... is this because they feel sick because of the meds, no one has ever told me.  Or is it simply that went having to take meds the bird is not feeling the best anyway. |

Bummer. I was hoping it tasted nice, but the first dose must have been beginners luck then. Some bubbles came out of his nose. At least we're friends again - for the moment.

Ooh, you don't want him inhaling the meds. Best tip - have everything ready beforehand, keep yourself calm, make it as quick and clean as possible but without feeling rushed. When you feel sure he has had the dose required, hold him gently, talk to him quietly telling him what a good boy he is and how much you love him, and try to get him to calm down before gently putting him down on a perch, play gym etc. Don't give the dose and then immediately let him go to fly off. He will be thinking he has escaped the deadly hand clutches.

This morning went a little better but he clamped his beak shut and I had to just try to get the tip of the syringe into the side of his mouth. I'm not sure he got all the meds but he definitely got some. I can't wait for this to be over. I talked to him the whole way through. Tonight I think I'll try wrapping him in a soft cloth, he wriggles so much. 0.3 mls sounds such a little bit, but it's a lot for a little bird.
I wish there was a way of mixing it with something but if it tastes so awful he won't eat it anyway.

Some people do better toweling their buds, but I can't do it. I hold them against my chest so that their legs and feet are not wrapping around my finger and pushing off to get out. I feel I have more control by holding their bodies rather than trying to feel what is happening though a cloth. |

I wrapped him up last night and this morning. He seemed to feel more secure and I found it easier. Also, because he wasn't wiggling so much I was able to hold him for a few moments and talk to him after he had his medicine. He's a little wary of me now, I hope he can rebuild his trust in me when this course of medication is finished and won't always look upon me as the horrible woman who makes him drink horrible medicine.

10 more doses to go. I can't wait for this to be over, and I imagine he can't either.

blue48 I feel for you and poor Bertie, it's not a nice thing for either of you to go through You are doing your best for your poorly boy though and I'm sure he'll forgive you - with the help of a little seeding grass!

Thanks willowsmum He had his medicine like a good boy this morning and came to me about an hour later for a cuddle. I was able to put my lip to his toe - my way of feeling the temperature - and I'm happy to report that although it's still a little warm, it's much cooler than it was. I'm sure it's not so sore either because he was a little clumsy at times flying and landing. Now he is as sure footed as he ever was. So happy I have this forum to come and talk about it. Hope I'm not boring you silly  |

Good news that he is improving. You are doing brilliantly with his meds. I remember having to do it and I feel for you. In a few weeks time i bet it will be all forgotten by Bertie at least....
