Hello
I have a single male budgie, who is about 1 and a half years old. He's lively, happy, energetic, and wild. He goes crazy with his toys and climbs around the cage a lot.
However, he will never leave his cage.
I've tried everything.
I opened the door for weeks, but he never showed any interest in coming out.
I offered him my finger (using a treat as motivation) and he stepped up. But every time I moved the hand towards the door of the cage, he immediately realized what I was trying to do and hopped back onto his perch.
I even tried creating a little path that he can follow out of the cage, using several perches, so that he wouldn't even need to fly or jump. I placed treats along the perches, but he only went a little way out the door and then hopped straight back into his cage.
I feel really sorry for him, because he's a bird and it should be in his nature to fly. Plus, I think he should probably get some exercise every once in a while.
I think it might have something to do with the fact that he had clipped wings when I bought him. His flight feathers quickly regrew, but I don't think he ever properly learned how to fly, seeing that he had clipped wings for the first few weeks of his life. I think that he might just be too inexperienced with his wings and is therefor scared to rely on them too much.
He did come out one time though, when the cage door was open and something outside frightened him and he accidentally flew out. Once he was outside, he seemed to enjoy it, even though he was a very clumsy flyer.
I really want him to experience the joy of flight, rather than being cooped up in his cage the whole time.
Is there any other way I can get him to come out of his cage and fly?
