Hello, I'm Sumire and I'm new to this forum. I have seven budgies at the moment, and their names are; Sebastian, Leo, Ian, Robbie, Charlie, Leela, and Jimmy. Four of them are blood-related as my two original budgies bred and had a total of three clutches. However, a lot of the babies died out of those clutches and most of the others that survived over the years have died from different means. Their mother as she got older grew a large tumor above her vent that got to the point that we had to put her down over fear that it would burst. Now the ones we have left are Sebastian who is the father, and three of the babies from the youngest clutch (Ian, Robbie, and Charlie). Leo was a rescue bird, as we found him being attacked by butcherbirds and saved him. Leela, we found in a small pet shop and bought her, and Jimmy we bought from a bird sanctuary shop.
We assume that Leo is the oldest bird out of them all because he is waxing on and is slowing down considerably. Sebastian is the second oldest and will be 7 years in November this year. After Sebastian are the three children, Ian, Robbie, and Charlie, that will be around 5 years this year. Jimmy is the second to last oldest, being around 1-2 years, and Leela is the youngest being around a year old.
Now to the illness: The symptoms or appearance its self is like a mix of throwing up and coughing/sneezing violently. Sometimes they do bring some food up with it, but its mainly as if they have something caught in their throats per se. The sneezing part could be described as a loud "tick tick tick" in sound. We think it may have something to do with a respiratory illness, but are still unsure. We first saw it in Leela a few days after we brought her home, and at first, we just thought she was either trying to imitate Leo who is a bit of a nervous bird, and throws up when he is scared, or she had something caught in her throat. However, she seemed to spread it to him and he started to throw up with the above symptoms as well as his normal throwing up. At this point, the other birds didn't seem to catch the illness and we thought it was just something that was affecting the "outsider" birds and not the original family. Then it started showing up more after we got Jimmy, as it ended up spreading to him and slightly to Ian as well. Presently, Jimmy seems to be the one most affected by it, with Leo not showing much anymore and Leela only occasionally. It doesn't affect Ian very much either. Sadly, we do not have an avian vet in our area, the nearest one we know of is 200km+ away from us. So any advice, diagnoses, help, or questions are very appreciated as my birds mean so very much to me. Thank you!
(Just a side note; Leo, Leela, and Jimmy were all quarantined for around a week after they were brought home and before we introduced them to the others.)
