Hi everyone, I hope you’re all keeping well during these difficult times!
I’m just looking for some advice. I’ve noticed Sky has been squeaking when she’s breathing on and off. I’ve also noticed she’s squeaking whilst trying to preen herself too. Obviously I’m a bit concerned there’s a problem, I’ve ordered some Invermectin 0.1% to put on her in case it’s air sac mites (could it be?). But I’m just wondering if anyone has any other possible ideas or whether I should be doing anything? Like now she’s fast asleep, no squeaks, then she will randomly have some (and of course the squeaks whilst preening herself too). Just worried about her, she is eating and drinking fine though. She did recently choke in a seed husk a couple of times so it’s made me wonder whether that’s caused an infection in her lungs? Is that even possible?
Anyway, thank you in advance for any help, I truly hope you’re all keeping safe.
Love Becca, Sky & Sol x

Sorry no one has been on to answer you, mintysowner. I've been away for some time. I'd suggest you get Sky checked out for a respiratory infection, and in the meantime try giving her a sauna in a steamy bathroom for 15-20 min at a time. My Misty gets this from time to time. He has a chronic sinus infection which raises its ugly head during our wet season - hot humid conditions are prime for chronic conditions. We haven't been able to clear it up completely and the next step is to get his head drilled, I haven't gone there!! Sinuses have very little blood supply so are hard to clear up with antibiotics. Hopefully Sky simply has a respiratory infection which will be easily treated.

Sorry from me too Becca, the forum is so busy some days, and posts are missed.
How is Sky now, and how are you, keeping well I hope.

Thanks so much both of you. Sky had her second lot of mite treatment Thursday evening and today I’d thought how much quieter her breathing has been... until this evening she seemed extremely quiet and sleepy. She sat on my shoulder asleep hardly moving, and occasionally with her wings out a bit from her body and then started to be sick and pooping... I’ve put her into a separate cage from Sol and cleaned both cages out (I’m exhausted, I was about to go to bed - I’m really worried about her. Could the Ivermectin Drops 0.1% have done this? I was a bit confused as I heard her poop (she made a noise) and then as she was being sick it looked like she had vomited up poop as well?! I’ll attach a couple of photos... :/ she’s just sat on a flat perch fast asleep now but I could tell she just wasn’t right. I’m so worried :/

She’s also started straining on and off and I looked and she’s not done anymore droppings just one with mostly urea in it (I’ll attach a photo). I’m not sure if she’s straining because maybe she can’t poop or god forbid she’s not egg bound or something? :’(

I've not had any experience with egg-bound hens but if you feel this might be an issue, give her calcivet in her water plus a drop directly into her beak. Does her vent look strained, swollen or any other way odd? Is she sitting up straight, or leaning forward? If she was already under the weather it is possible that the ivermectin didn't help her feel any better, and maybe even worse. Keep her warm - get the heat lamp onto one end of her cage. Also try the sauna. If you have any sunshine and can get her into it, do so. Just make sure she can get shade if she needs it. I'm really at a loss to know how to help you further. She really needs to see a vet who will treat her with the respect she deserves.

Thank you Hezz - I appreciate it’s so hard to give advice when ideally they just need to be seen by an avian vet. I ended taking her to an avian vet and they’ve kept her in because she was too unwell to come home. The vet was really nice and he will force feed her to keep her strength up, start her on some antibiotics too. He did test her crop but this was negative however her poo is so watery and light green that he thinks it could possibly be liver related, meaning it’s inflamed/enlarged and possibly also pushing on other organs causing her to have breathing symptoms/squeaks too. He was going to test her poo when she hopefully does another one. The next step would be to do an x-Ray if she doesn’t improve or it reoccurs but it makes me nervous her having an anaesthetic as I’m sure she’s already stressed out right now I hope she won’t hate me for all of this... she won’t have liked all the handling and force fed to eat/crop test etc. I also wasn’t allowed in because of corona rules so saw the vet outside. I’ll let you know if any updates, in the meantime Sol hasn’t been too bad and has been talking away to me, but I do think he’s confused where she’s gone! xx

I took photos of her and her poo/being sick in case I needed to show the vet. Breaks my heart to see her so unwell

I'm so sorry she is poorly. You've done the right thing, I know how you feel re: the force feeding. One of mine had that done once and I felt awful, but I feel when they get so poorly you have to throw everything at the illness that you can to give them the best chance.
Hopefully with the antibiotics and having the right amount of food she will start to feel better.

While the crop feed isn't fun, it is the best thing to get some sustenance into them when unwell. The vet can also give the AB's in the same way, at the same time. Poor baby girl, but I'm glad you were able to find someone who you trust to take care of her. I too would be hesitant to get her x-rayed, but I would throw everything possible at treating her for an inflamed liver if the vet thinks this is her problem. Once she finishes her meds, though.
Fingers crossed that she improves quickly and can come home. xx

Oh poor Sky. I'm sorry that I missed your initial post.
I hope the vet can help her and she makes a full recovery.
I hope Sol is okay without her for a short while.
